A Solid Sequel To Tesser

Ambryn is the 2nd story of what Chris says will be a trilogy. The first was Tesser. Tesser and Ambryn are the names of 2 of 7 dragons, so maybe we can get Chris to reconsider & write 7 stories????

Anywhoozle, Tesser laid the foundation for the series. There are 7 dragons and each has certain responsibilities to the world. Tesser's is life. Ambryn is responsible for death.

This series explores a world where dragons & magic are real, along with all the magical creatures that entails, trolls and nymphs and werewolves and all. Ambryn deals primarily with vampires (they are the cheaters of death). It's a magical murder/mystery with the fate of the world in play. Several characters from Tesser are integral to the telling of it, though Tesser himself has only a bit part at the start.

All in all I enjoyed it. it had plenty of intrigue & action to keep things moving along and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

But I am dinging one star for a very specific reason: In these books, Chris has employed an alternating person narration. This in itself isn't a bad thing, but the way he implemented it just bugs me. It isn't that the perspective changes from chapter to chapter, it's that he switches randomly from first to third person frequently. He commonly does this within a paragraph. I just found this highly distracting as I kept trying to decide just who was doing the talking. I finally that the only way to deal with it was to ignore it LOL

OK, on to the next in the series. Don't keep us waiting too long...

This book was a great followup to Tesser.I explored more of the supernatural coming into the world.The characters were relateable, and the novel flowed smoothly.My only complaint is having to wait for more int he series.

Ambryn & the Cheaters of Death was an excellent read! The story is told from the perspective of various interesting characters where the reader is shown how each are reacting to the unfolding events, some return from Tesser, while several newcomers leave you looking forward to seeing them again when the next book in the series comes out. Ambryn, the dragon of death made a mistake, a mistake that he takes very personally, once again the actions he will undertake will have far reaching ramifications. Only reason I can't give this a 5 star review is I felt the ending a tad bit rushed, while everything does get wrapped up and no cliffhangers, I'm left wanting for maybe one extra chapter to tie things together a little bit more solidly. To be clear I did receive a review copy of Ambryn, but that doesn't effect my opinion of the story, would have loved it regardless.

A jewel in the crown

This musical failed after only 9 performances. It's too bad because it boasted Arthur Laurents, Stephen Sondheim, Herbet Ross, and David Merrick among its credits. The book was published 10 years after it closed using the last existant script known. It's the story of a town so broke that they fake a miracle to bring in pilgrims who'll spend their money on it. Through a convoluted, although fascinating plot and characters that you really have to pay attention to the story unfolds. No spoiler here. It is tightly written and the "break" between spoken and sung word is seamless on paper. This is a good book for anyone who loves Sondheim, Laurents, or the theater in general to have. It will take a lot of visualization and multiple reads to get it all (it also helps to have the cast album - not the concert one with Kahn, but the original one with Lansbury). If you really want to be challenhed and entertained get this.

One of the best scores ever written...

Although this show was short-lived it was still one of the best shows not only of the 60s but of the whole century! This show has it all! A little bit of farce, some regular comedy, music, some drama, and some melodrama! This is a musical for people no matter what their tastes! Sondheim's music lifts you up and breaks your heart and you still wind up loving it!

This is one of the most hilarious, yet intelligent and moving shows one can ever read. Even without hearing Mr. Sondheim's delightfully flowing melodies one can still find enjoyment in Mr. Laurent's book and Sondheim's lyrics.

Gripping and beautifully written!

You don't have to love historical fiction to love this book. Nor do you have to appreciate sculpture, or care about the politics of public art. You don't even have to be able to find Paris on a map. No, all it takes to love this book is a willingness to lose yourself in a story about a woman whose motto, if she lived now, would've been "Go big or go home."

Camille Claudel (about whom I knew exactly nothing) is a heroine I won't soon forget. Consumed by her drive to create, and inflamed by her love for her tutor, Auguste Rodin, Camille achieves more than any woman sculptor of her time, and pays the price at every level. Passion, heartache, entanglements and betrayal--it's all here.

Webb frames the story beautifully, carrying us into nineteenth century Paris and through the studios, salons and homes of the working artists and their models, benefactors, rivals and families. Her writing is precise (but never arch), assured and utterly convincing. I could feel the clay in Claudel's hand, and the fire in her heart.

Fast-paced and filled with raw emotion, Rodin's Lover is an impressive achievement, and a reminder of the power of great stories about great lives, whenever they were lived.

Exceptionally researched

Webb’s illustration of the complicated and abundantly talented artist Camille Claudel focuses on her tumultuous and licentious affair with Auguste Rodin, a man penetrating her heart yet elusive for her to possess.

Exceptionally researched, Webb highlights the art world in all its glory and harshness. The politics, power and societal propriety seizing artists and their creativity creating a fissure of misunderstanding. A world full of sexism and misogyny as female artists struggle to penetrate a male dominated world, an improper vocation fitting a woman.

Webb provides snippets of Claudel, more could have been offered besides her love of Rodin and their forbidden dalliance. Rodin comes across as weak, a man hopelessly in love with his artistic equal but bound by obligation and duty preventing a full fledged commitment with Claudel.

Despite their runaway attraction, the narrative fails to convey their deep rooted connection, it feels flat, lack of spark. Their mutual appetite for sculpting is also tempered. Two obsessive creatures in both art and love are not expressed as they could be in the narrative, rather a quiet storm leaving the reader anticipating and wanting more declared.

I was hoping Claudel’s slow descent into ‘madness’ was examined more. What drove her to ‘madness’ or was she a victim shut away for convenience sake of her ‘family’ as a maverick, an intelligent independent woman craving more or was art the culprit – much delving left wide open in this area.

An entertaining read, it’s a romance narrative rather than an in depth probe into the woman Camille Claudel. A woman worthy of notice and artistic praise as her life is often questioned in its shroud of mystery and unanswered questions. I was expecting Webb to take a different avenue with Claudel, despite my frustration this is a worthwhile read, if anything the reader will want to discover more of Camille Claudel on their own of her life, art, and tragic circumstances.

Realistic, tender, passionate historical novel in Belle Époque Paris

Webb's second novel focuses on a less well known figure, French Belle Époque sculptor Camille Claudel, and this novel surpasses her first (which was pretty fabulous!).

Camille is a bit of a savant, a self-taught sculptor with immense talent and a matching ego. Driven to pursue her art, she receives tutoring in Paris from one of France's preeminent sculptors, but her family is split in their support of her passion. Camille's father supports her while her mother rages against the unorthodox behavior of her daughter. While her mother tries to arrange a marriage, Camille is instead drawn to her newest tutor, the much lauded Auguste Rodin.

Lest you fear this is just another hist fic focusing on a lady with a famous lover, let me reassure you this is a far more complicated, rich, and eventful story. Camille is a hard heroine to love: prickly, confident to the point of obnoxious, and single-minded. In Webb's hands, she isn't softened nor does she turn flat the moment she falls into her lover's arms.

In fact, Webb's emotional sensitivity is something I've come to admire in her books as the dramatic events unfold without veering into melodrama. Webb doesn't shy from the hard, heartbreaking parts of Camille's life (I'm being vague about these parts for those unfamiliar with Camille's story, but there's nothing fluffy here!) and intense moments are touched with humor, bittersweet sadness, or irony, making it impossible for this reader to shake Camille's story.

I sometimes find books about artists tricky; it can be hard to render into compelling narrative endeavors that depend on other senses. But Webb managed to evoke the tactile experience of sculpting as well as describing the various sculptures and pieces of art without sounding like a text book. I "saw" the works even without having to google them (although google I did!). I have to give a particular shout out to Joshua DeLillo, who sketched three of Camille's works for use in this novel. They look like photographs, they're so finely rendered, and were a welcome addition to the story.

This is the second novel I read since having my baby (and the second for 2015), and it was a knockout -- well worth stealing time to read. A winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, Erik H. Erikson was renowned worldwide as teacher, clinician, and theorist in the field of psychoanalysis and human development.

Joan Mowat Erikson was born in Canada; she earned her B.A. in Education at Columbia University and an M.A. in Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a teacher, writer, and craftsman and has worked with gold, silver, and precious stones. She is the author of a previous book, The Universal Bead. She is married to the noted psychoanalyst Erik H. Erikson.

I bought this book because I needed an in depth analysis of Erikson's Theory. I was happy to buy this book because it not only referenced his work and explained it well, but there was added perspective by the author that was helpful. Would suggest this book to anyone that is studying the field of psychology.

The 9th Stage of Identity Development

I love the idea of a 9th Stage of "Transcendance" (yes, it's spelled "dance") with the virtue of "faith". Joan Erikson does hint at a certain element of pessimism over the deterioration of previous stages earned, going downhill in old age. However, in the end she speaks of the 9th stage that more than makes up for those losses. I think this stage could get a little more attention ..... transcendance and faith are worth teaching alongside the other 8 stages.

I love this book! I picked it up for pennies on Amazon, and will keep in handy forever.

Do not settle for second-hand information about Erikson theory. This book is an easy read, and brings a simple understanding to the Erikson stages and crisis.

I prefer Bowen's work, but for behavioral theory assignments, this is the best money you will spend.

This play is based on an actual incident involving two wealthy prep boys who murdered a 14 year old "for the thrill of it." There is plenty of intrigue in this work, and it formed the basis of the 1948 Alfred Hitchcock film "Rope." Hitch modified the play and removed the homosexual aspect of the players, yet the film version has several subtle visual incidents to ignite one's homophobic tendencies! Great reading. Should be read first before seeing the film version.

Quick and High Quality

Removal of the section on waveguide discontinuity analysis

The third edition of FINITE ELEMENTS FOR ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS by Silvester & Ferrari is an excellent book. However, I am quite disappointed with the removal of the section on scattering matrix calculation and waveguide discontinuity analysis which existed (Ch.9, section 4) in the second edition of the book.

Well structured and easily applicable to other areas

The finite element method is a generalization of the Ritz or variational method which you've probably seen in quantum mechanics. Here the energy integral of a trial function is minimized which gives an estimate of ground state energy. The region of integration is easy here or in any event always the same-over all space. In the finite element method, a variational or minimum principle is used and boundaries of the region over which this particular functional is to be minimized are taken into account in the method and not swept under the rug. Though this book is addressed to electrical engineers, the methods and techniques given are easily portable to other areas of mathematical physics(boundary value problems). I'll give an outline of the first section of chapter 2 which I view as a prototype of the method and also the pattern followed in other sections and examples in the book.
In this example the electric field or rather its potential is to be found between two conductors of a coaxial transmission line of rectangular cross section. Only the 2d cross section need be considered. The Laplace equation for the potential between the two rectangles needs to be solved(approximately). The inner and outer conductors are equipotential surfaces and by symmetry you only need the solution in one quadrant(say +x,+y). Partition this piece into triangles in any way you like as long as they fit together to exactly form this piece(here exact is possible, you may have to settle for close enough on curved boundaries) and for the time being slightly separate these triangles so you can view their vertices as distinct and yet know which vertices need to coincide when put back together. We're going to find values of the potential at the vertices of these triangles. Note that on the conductors the vertex potentials are known or prescribed constants-takes account of boundary. In each triangle an approximation of the potential is sought, they use the simple first-order form u=c+ax+by and since we know the coordinates of the vertices and we assign a variable or constant potential to each we can use Cramer's rule and solve for a, b, and c, results in u=u(1)d(x,y)+u(2)e(x,y)+u(3)f(x,y) where the u's are the potentials at the three vertices and d, e, and f are functions of x,y and vertex position coordinates. Later on in the book the d, e, f are identified as barycentric coordinates and the second form recurs as the interpolative approximation. Going back to our minimum principle the authors show that minimization of electrostatic energy(integral of the square of the gradient of the potential over a region) is equivalent to solution of the Laplace equation in the region in the sense that a solution of the Laplace equation when used as the potential in the integral will give it a minimal value and vice versa. We put our interpolative approximation in for the potential, take gradients(only x and y), etc. and integrate over this particular triangle or element which results in a quadratic form in the three potentials. We add together all the resulting quadratic forms from each triangle(called W-potential function for the region) and write this in form W=U(T) S U where U is the column vector with the potentials as components and U(T) is its transpose-S is the matrix resulting from this factorization. Remembering that our triangles have to be joined and redundant potentials then identified, we'll accomplish this by means of a matrix of 1's and 0's as follows. Suppose for example in the longer or disconnected state column U vector there is a 2nd and an 8th component but when triangles are joined in forming the original region this 2nd vertex and 8th vertex are the same hence the same potential. We'll develop a matrix which gives the longer disconnected state column U vector from the product of the matrix and the shorter connected state column U vector in that order. Here we go, for that 2nd and 8th element, in the 2nd column of the matrix put a 1 in the 2nd and 8th positions and 0's at the others. The columns have the same length as the longer vector with rows the same length as the shorter vector. Say 1st, 4th, and 7th are to be identified-in first column, 1's at 1st, 4th, and 7th positions, 0's at the rest. Get it-notice the column selected in the matrix is the same as the position of the element in the shorter column. Remembering the transpose of the product is the product of the transposes in reverse order, we substitute the product for the longer U in the W expression and this is to be minimized only with respect to the variable u's not the constant ones on the boundaries. Differentiate W and set equal to 0 for each variable u and apply Cramer's rule to this set of equations-got your u's now.
Sorry about the dissertation but the rest of the book can be viewed as extensions and developments on this pattern. Also I didn't want to give one of those supercilious (and phony) name dropping reviews. I wanted to give you the gist of the finite element method.

Hard and Heavy but good

I think that the authors don't fill in their matrices or prove some of the results may be my worst fault for this book.
The book is well written and contains most of the formulas and Fortran program you need to do this kind of analysis.
I would have like more complex plane triangles and some more higher dimensional "triangulations".
But the text has been an eye opener for me and I have a lot of study to get the results where I can really understand them.
This text is not an easy one, but the subject even over simplified would still be a very hard one. I think this is an advanced graduate text
and would give most undergrads outside of MIT nightmares.
