An Epic and Senses Shattering Look at the world thru the eye of a Master Pimp!

This book should be made in to a movie. This is most likely the 2nd most cinematic look at the world of Pimping to date. It's only out done by the progenitor of the genre, Robert "Iceberg Slim" Beck's uber classic memoir "PIMP" in it's level of vividity. The Book starts out with a brief and well thought out synopsis on Pimp philosophy. Jimi Starr gives you a matrix red pill tour Morpheus style, and makes a clear case for the Pimp in a world where misandry seems to go totally unnoticed by the masses of men. You can take or leave it, but it would appear that Pimps have had the solution to "Manipulated Man" long before Ester Vilar even thought about putting the pen to paper.

Then Jimi takes you 3000 miles for his home in San Francisco, California to late 70's/early 80's NYC, where he encounters things most people could never even dream of seeing. Things such as child raping corrupt cops (New York in the early 80's? Yes, they existed), homicidal Puerto Rican stick up boys and whores that practice bestiality ( Yes, I said it BESTIALITY). It doesn't stop there, Jimi takes his pimpin' all over the country and even into Canada with wild tales at every stop. You also get to enjoy the side stories, subplots and twist with the familiar characters like "Insane Wayne" ,"Rosebudd" and the legendary "Filmore Slim". There is no reason why this book shouldn't be made into a movie. I can see Anthony Mackie ("Hurt Locker" The Adjustment Bureau" and "She Hate Me") playing Jimi Starr. This definitely a cinematic page turner and one of the best books in the genre.

Real talk this is hands down a good book with real game. I have a highlighter pen I use for the book Dam near every page is highlighted trust me I'm ready for book 2 .

About the Author

Michael Moesgaard Andersen is an adjunct Professor of Strategy at Copenhagen Business School, Denmark. He runs his own venture capital company, focused on creating next generation practices. Prior to this, he was the co-owner and CEO of a medium-sized, globally focused consulting business.

Flemming Poulfelt is Professor of Management and Strategy and Vice Dean at Copenhagen Business School, Denmark. He has also served on faculties at universities in Europe, the US, and Australia.

Fantasy fans, don't bite all your fingernails at once! Great read here:)

Nothing better for a book-lover than to be given a book to read, especially one that is to our liking! I was lucky enough to receive an advanced review copy of M. Secchia's Dragonfriend. I love reading fantasy and am always in awe of authors who go iut of their way to create brave new worlds many of us would like to visit or live in. Knowing full well such magic only exists in books and movies, I readily grabbed the text and dove into reading.
From the very first chapter, thrilling and action-packed, you just love the heroine and will probably, just the way I did, devour the following pages, rooting for her and her dragonet friend (no more spoilers ahead, I promise to be very careful about that) throughout all their hardships and friendships. Whether you are a teenage fantasy fan or an adult with an adventurous heart, this intriguing story will lure you in from the start.
Spectacular landscapes, amazingly graphic action scenes, gorgeous descriptions with plenty of detail... My absolute favourite scenes are the ones in which the differences in the world, habits, traditions and capabilities of humans and mythical creatures are displayed, with so much humour, insight and emotion, that a proper fantasy fan will relish in every discourse line and every thought shared telepathically between the characters. In this kind of a book, I like to be able to feel the story with all my senses, and the author writes using them - he shares the sounds and silence, the scents and touch, and shows you what he sees, so you can be immersed in reading, just the way a good movie will do, and even better. 
I mean, if you don't enjoy all that in a fantasy book, then how about majestic creatures described with such detail that you can imagine them in the room next to you, feel their breaths and hear their thoughts in your heads? Life-threatening situations which will have you gripping the covers or your readers till your knuckles are white? And if that doesn't do the trick, a human girl in the midst of the battle of worlds with... oh no, no spoilers! Go ahead, read the book if you dare!
And then hope for the sequel soon, with the rest of the fans! Pure fantasy, with all the flavours you need in a great fantasy adventure!

Superb world building & fantastic dragons

I bought this book because of the fabulous cover art (and because I love dragons). The first third of the book was seamlessly perfect and so compelling I couldn't put it down. But then the pacing became uneven as scenes I wanted to "see" were skipped over or told in flashback, which became a little frustrating. The writing overall, however, is superb. The world building is one of the best I've ever read, and the dragons of all sizes are fantastically rendered! I admired the young main character's grit and courage, but her "love interest" was not believable because those crucial scenes were skipped over. There was one disturbing scene of what seemed to be "dragon lust" but other than that the book is a reliable PG-13 for fantasy violence, so suitable for older teens. I am looking forward to reading the rest of Mr. Secchia's books in this fascinating world.

It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This!

Beautiful. Enchanting. Hilarious. Tragic. Touching. Empowering.

You could use any of those words to describe Dragonfriend but in truth to do this book justice you’d have to use them all. It is so many different things woven together into one book that you can’t help but fall in love with Hualiama as well as her companions Flicker (the dragonet) and Grandion (the dragon).

Hualiama is one of those characters that you’ll never forget after finishing the book. In the beginning she’s nothing but a royal bastard, the half-daughter of the king who stands up to his captain-of-the-guard, the usurper of the Onyx Throne. She doesn’t even particularly like her father but she likes Ra’aba even less and for her trouble she gets her back and stomach sliced open before being tossed off the Dragonship to die. But thanks to Flicker breaking her fall, carrying her to safety and patching her up, Hualiama isn’t so easy to get rid of. (If you don’t know, dragonets aren’t much bigger than a couple of feet long and just a little bigger in wingspan so for Flicker to carry a human, even a tiny one, it was a huge sacrifice on his part.) As Flicker nurses her back to health and teaches her to speak in a civilized manner—Dragonish, of course—she grows stronger and more and more determined to seek revenge against the man who deposed her family. No one in her family save for her adoptive mother may like her, but Hualiama loves them with a fierce, protective sort of love that leads her to the gates of hell and back in her quest.

What I found really interesting about Dragonfriend is that it’s set 425 years before the ‘main series’, Shapeshifter Dragons. It’s set almost 275 years before the spin-off series, Shapeshifter Dragon Legends. So all of the technology that’s introduced first in Legends and then in the main series is just in its infancy. There are no meriatite-fuelled Dragonships; they’re powered by the back-breaker, the machine that soldiers have to pedal in order to keep the ship moving. Dragons and humans have no contact with one another whereas in Legends it’s the peak of Dragon Riders and in the main series the Dragon Rider era has waned and dragons are hunted. You really don’t have to read Aranya and Shadow Dragon from the main series or The Pygmy Dragon from the spin-off in order to appreciate Dragonfriend, but it does make the whole experience more enjoyable. However, if you start with Dragonfriend, go to The Pygmy Dragon and then move on to Aranya and Shadow Dragon, you’ll actually be reading the series in the in-universe chronological order. So really, either way works and whether this is your first Marc Secchia book or not, you’ll really appreciate the sheer amount of detail he puts into all of his world-building.

One of the things that constantly surprises me is Marc Secchia’s ability to write from a female perspective so believably. He creates these amazingly strong characters but they’re not all Action Girls! Hualiama tries to fight but is hopelessly clumsy and has to really, really work at it. Pip from The Pygmy Dragon was born gifted at fighting but is at a huge disadvantage because of her small size. Aranya is better than Hualiama but that’s because her father made absolutely sure she became good at fighting whereas Hualiama’s father the king actively discouraged Hualiama’s more masculine pursuits. Each female main character has her own journey to womanhood in unique ways and Hualiama’s is just so amazing. She goes through so much in order to achieve her goals and even though she tries her hardest, sometimes (much like in the real world) things don’t work out. Her life is one of pure happiness and pure tragedy and even though I’m not a very emotional reader I must admit I balled my eyes out at the ending of this book. I defy anyone not to become attached to Hualiama throughout this book. It’s impossible because Marc Secchia not only writes believable and diverse female characters, his writing has such an emotional quality that you won’t be able to remain impassive during their struggles. You’ll really be rooting for Hualiama, trust me. Even when she makes mistakes, you’ll root for her.

The plot starts off pretty fast-paced compared to the other three books in the Island World and although it does slow down in terms of action, it always remains interesting. There’s always that undercurrent of tension as Hualiama is rehabilitated and learns from Flicker and it helps that the point of view changes quite naturally between the two friends. With any other characters I’d say changing points of view with no clear page break would be nothing but trouble but the points of view of Flicker and Hualiama are so different that you’ll never get confused. There’s a tremendous difference between a dragonet and a human being and the difference is even more pronounced when our dragon, Grandion, joins the story. The point of view switches definitely keep things interesting but in reality you could have had the whole book from Hualiama’s point of view and it would still be able to keep readers’ attention. It really is just a fascinating story with so many plot twists your head will spin.

If you haven’t already guessed, I really did love this book. This is definitely one of my top 10 favourites of all time and considering I read on average 200 books per year, that’s really saying something. It’s an incredible book and everyone should buy it. It will make you laugh, cry and just generally have an amazing time. The cliffhanger will also make you as eager as I am for the next book. Compact reference material at right price for working engineers

As a practicing engineer, I was looking for a reference on the subject that would complement a copy of Calculus Vol. 1 (single variable) by Einar, Salas, and Hille that I already had and I didn't want to pay a typical hardcover textbook price. Beyond the quality core material, the book has some interesting sections interspersed between chapters that covers related historical developments involving the mathematical geniuses whose names are attached to the theorems. Nice price for thorough material.

Okay but be sure to pay attention.

I've been search for this book and to get a good deal a while now. A friend told me he ordered his on amazon, so I went blindly to place my order thinking I would get the exact copy of the picture posted here. But i later found out I was wrong. The difference is that the picture here is for single Variable Calculus but if you should buy this you will actually get a multivariate version. So buyer pay attention not to buy a gym kit if you are not ready to flex your muscle. I have to plan well before leaving the house if I really had to take this book along. It's twice the weight of the Single variable version. It's not so bad cause I now have all the calc. in one but it's just an extra job for a transit taking student like me.

A "Must Have" refrigeration book. Buy two !

If you've done some HVAC work but find yourself stumped the first time you work on a freezer or frig, then you need this book!. This is a world of oil losses, hard to know line pressures, strange refrigerant valves and controls and head masters, etc. And this book will explain them all to you with lots of plain talk, plain examples, great drawings, and even a cd-rom of animation. And best of all, it has a page of "Rules of Thumb", such as; High Efficieny (seer) condenser splits = 20 degrees and below. And since refrigerant recovery of freezers and frig's are far more common place than HVAC work, it covers several methods of evacuation and recovery. This book has lots of troubleshooting notes and lots of pictures and all the basics of refrigeration from motors, capillarys, TEV'S and defrosters through superheat and critical charging and so much more. I own many hvac books and this one absolutely stands out as a 'must have' book ! Another good book to have when you want to "master" the trade, is Technician's Guide to Refrigeration Systems'by Corinchock. And of course, Troubleshooting and Servicing Modern Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems by Tomczyk. Warning that Tomczyk's book is sold as several books, each with a few chapters, so only buy the complete book I mentioned above, else you will have duplicate text.

the book is well put together and provides well thought out information, as well as being in depth enough to help anyone serious about the HVAC/R trade. I hate spending money for bad books and am happy to recommend this book for purchase. Buy it.

A tour of the world, the heart, and life

Daniel Glick's book might become a classic. While mourning the death of his brother and his rather sudden divorce from his wife, Glick finds himself alone with his two children for almost the first time. He chooses to take them around the world in an effort to see some of the planet's endangered species before it's too late. One gets the sense that it's also his effort to become a father before it's too late.
Monkey Dancing works on many levels: environmental journalism, a travelogue, a lesson in parenting. Using the metaphor of world travel, Glick journeys into the heart of fatherhood, marriage, family, loss, conflict, change, and life.

An epic journey, both inwardly and out

Whether you're looking for an escapist adventure, soul-searching memoir or a captivating close-up of natural wonder, Monkey Dancing will not disappoint. Dan Glick's account of his half-year global journey as a newly single dad with two kids is a humorous and moving story, full of reflection and insight about human relationships, with each other and with the planet.
After his wife left him unexpectedly for a woman and his brother died of cancer at 48, Glick sought perspective and healing through traveling and nature -- not unusual modes of solace, but decidedly different when you take 9- and 13-year-old siblings along to the python-infested jungles of Borneo or leech-laden trails in Nepal. Acutely aware that life can be short and unpredictable, Glick wanted to show his kids some of the world's endangered treasures while there was still a chance to do so
The entertaining narrative will amuse anyone who has traveled to challenging places (or wants to), especially those intrepid parents who have experienced both the exasperation and joys of discovery with children in tow. And it may well inspire parents who haven't to give it a go, even -- or maybe particularly -- in a world that currently seems so uncertain.
Monkey Dancing is also a stark tale of the grim conditions facing many of the earth's most spectacular ecosystems. Glick, who covered the environment as a journalist, weaves solid reporting among personal anecdotes for a tale that is as much about our wider connections with the natural world as our ties to our fellow humans.
When Glick learned that 40 percent of the world's coral reefs are gone, Australia's Great Barrier Reef became a top destination on his itinerary. As a father with a passion for nature, he wanted his kids to float among the technicolor fish and flora submerged beneath a turquoise ocean. As a journalist, he saw a story in the fact that even here, in a developed country where the environment is relatively protected, this reef is still gravely threatened. It wasn't inconceivable that the remaining coral reefs could disappear in his children's lifetimes.
He also chose destinations with "charismatic megafauna" that would appeal to his kids: orangutans in Borneo, rhinoceroses in Vietnam and Nepal, and the tigers of the Nepalese lowland plains. Those species, however, are on the verge of extinction, a fact apparent in how difficult it was to locate these animals.
Yet the family's observations were not without hope. Glick shares conservation success stories among the tragedies, offering encouragement that some of the marvels his children encountered may be available to their grandchildren one day as well.
It's not every kid that gets a first-hand look at the earth's vanishing wild places, let alone a chance to bond with their dad in such environs for months on end. Kolya and Zoe Glick are blessed indeed. In the pages of Monkey Dancing, fortunate readers can travel with them, gleaning inspiration to embark on journeys of their own toward deeper, more meaningful connections with the people, the creatures and the remarkable natural places we love.

It's the story, stupid...

I love just about anything written by a seasoned journalist ... this includes Glick. However, as I am also a Buddhist, quasi-environmentalist, adventure lover, traveler, writer/journalist with two kids and a wife, I can't find a thing wrong with this book. If you're a teetotalling Xian who can't stand that a father introduces his son to drugs/alcohol instead of letting him learn on his own under the pressure of other teens, then you might not like this. But, I must point out, that this is merely a single episode in the book. And it also demonstrates that smart people know how to parent.

The book brings together episodes of adventures in other countries, learning to cope with loss, enjoying the weird brilliance of being human, understanding the threats to our environment, and appreciating life in a developed country. And it's written by someone who knows how to write. Glick isn't someone without talent and/or skills that happens to take a fiction writing seminar and gets lucky with a publisher; he knows how to write.

This is my favorite book of 2003.

bought this as a gift for my boyfriend as we both love the music from the Miyazaki films! sheet music collection includes intermediate level cello score with separate piano accompaniment. the company i ordered it from, Japan Cool Books, also included an english translation of the all the japanese titles. he can't wait to start playing!

I purchased these for my son who has weak cognitive skills. These cards have strengthened his understanding of visual concepts, such as directionality/order, reflection/symmetry,and rotation/position. I would definitely recommend these cards!

Great for Strengthening Visual Processing and Memory

As a cognitive brain trainer, special educator and mom of a child with special needs, I know what its like to look for a targeted tool that is fun. We want to be able to let our kids enjoy learning. I use these cards with all the students that I work with for my in person programs. After telling parents about how much fun they can be my online program participants want them too. What I like about the cards is that they not only help to strengthen the visual skills of my students but they also teach alternative ways to solve/approach problems. For example, just from understanding what the cards are asking can be a challenge for kids who are taught the typical 1,2,3 step approach to tackling a problem. The cards are fun, do what they are supposed to do and as added bonus your child learns some neat little tricks along the way to solving puzzles that can be used in their academics. For students are really weak in visual skills, I often provide them with manipulatives to work through the problem at first then take them away. For example, when the cards ask your child to identify which patterns of cubes will form an open box ... if your child cannot visualize this yet, then using click together geometric shapes will be a blessing to form the foundational map inside their brain. From there you can try the problems that needed the manipulative over again after Box A is done. If your child whizzes through these you can also go through them again and challenge them on time to find the correct answer. There is a Box B to this set that you can purchase separately and I recommend using this to continue building upon the foundational strengths you established with your child in Box A.
