Ms Theozen' s freshman foray into writing drew me into her journey from a naïve, virtuous young woman into an erotic virtuoso. The interesting mix of her travelogue with her journey of self awareness carried me with her, piquing my interest with each chapter of what new adventure and what unexplored aspect of her personality I would discover. As a traveller I recognised all of the cities through which her tale winds its way and found myself agreeing with many of her insights. An altogether very good read!

Expert's introductory book

This book is one of the few titled with "chemical biology" although quite a few university chemistry departments have inserted it into their names.

Within 100 pages all necessary facts are laid out in a clear format and logical flow. The size and brevity allows easy reading in a repetitive fashion which is a necessary practice in mastering this science. One can have a good grasp of the science in learning the subject or can flip through it within several hours as a reminder of certain facts. The references are very good selections too. One of them, "why nature chose phosphates", can be extremely revealing to anybody in the fields of chemical biology and biotechnology. Dr. Dobson is one of the leading scientists in protein folding research with many influential publications in Nature, Science etc. I was able to listen to his speech delivered in 2007 at Welch Foundation Annual Conference. This background has been very positively reflected in the book where relevant research frontiers are mentioned and revealing statements were presented such as "ATP is a condensing agent acting as DCC in organic chemistry". One has to admit it is a rare event for a scientist of this status to write an introductory book.

The book was straight forward and presented the material clearly and concisely (as with most "Foundations"). Was a nice introduction and recap of biological processes and organization that is nice to now own in a small book. Definitely recommended for upper undergraduate or beginning graduate students as I believe it is intended.

Worth the money for checking out nonorthodox groups

House goes over 19 different quasi-Christian religions and, although I have not read very much yet, initial appearances show that he appears to have done a very nice job. He lists the different viewpoints of these religions and then contrasts them with "Orthodox" Christianity. He uses original sources to support himself so that it's not just his opinion, but rather the opinion of the group's leaders. Certainly some may come in and disagree about certain nuances regarding the way he lays out the orthodox position (i.e. a Catholic or Greek Orthodox layperson may not see eye-to-eye on salvation and justification through faith alone), but House gives verses from the Bible to support himself. He also uses expert resources to check his work and make sure his arguments were not faulty. I will keep this reference near-by, and when I have a question about a particular group's teaching, I will be sure to see what this has to say.
I do have two complaints: First, the book is so big (350 pages, 8.5 x 11 format) and, with the pages getting flipped back and forth, I'm scared the spine may not hold out. I'm wondering why the publisher didn't use a metal ring spine to make it easier to lay the book flat and help it withstand the constant paging back and forth. Also, what about the Boston (discipleship) movement? I would have liked material on this growing group. However, I can't lessen my recommendation of the book despite my complaints.

I found Daily Life of the Ancient Greeks to be a very enlightening resource. While the author admits that not a lot is known of these times most of what we know comes from ancient Athens. This book opened my eyes to the culture and livening conditions that existed in these times. When I envision ancient Greece I see their wonderful works of art, philosophy, architecture and stories, little would I expect that the ancient streets of Greece were littered with feces. This is just one of the many interesting facts one can discover in this easily accessible book. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about life in ancient Greek times.

Great Pictures, Short on Facts.

Surprisingly well presented hard cover coffee table book loaded page after page with excellent photos like that seen on the cover. The premise is that these African stone circles date back well over 100,000yrs constituting to the authors evidence of the Sumerian Annunaki god's human gold mining settlement outlined in previous works by noted ancient astronaut theorist Zecharia Sitchin. They further surmise the circles were made to take advantage of the Earth's natural energy lines for various purposes and that many may have astronomical significance. They also make note of long tracks of stacked stone parallel lines, or roads, leading from the circles (which they relate to sluicing gates for metal refinery) as well as what appears to be large tracts of agricultural terracing found on many hillsides.

It is safe to say this is not a scholarly work, and is best described as a picture book, so if you are looking for hard facts or even a well thought out hypothesis in any direction you will certainly be left wanting. Speculative leaps are often made in their interpretation of stone blocks as "statues" or odd shaped rocks as "tools", but nevertheless they are intriguing as possibly being man-made objects of such age whatever their purpose. When I left South Africa September 2011 after one big conference and another workshop a friend handed me out a gift. It was the book 'Temples of the African Gods'. Clearly I had to try to read this book.

POINT OF VIEW

I am not a historian nor an archaeologist but nevertheless I am dealing with the evolution of the universe, the biological life on earth as well as some special developments within the biological evolution. From this I have learned that since about 10 - 15 years there seems to by some 'convergence' of scholarly opinions that the today living 'humans' are all descendants of the 'homo sapiens' who about -60.000 made his way out of Africa along the Arabian Peninsula into Asia, Australia, Europe, North- and South-America. There seems to be also some interdependence between this migration and the eruption of the super-vulcano at lake Toba in Sumatra, which happened somewhere in the time span -75.000 until -65.000.

MANY PICTURES, SPARCE TEXTS

The book is not a 'usual' science book with many texts, many references etc. but it comes to your eyes rather as an illustrated book. About 133 pages out of 176 are photographs often -- but not always -- with some short explaining texts. The photographs are mostly impressive, but only seldom you can find clear references where exactly is the place shown in the picture or what exactly is the material shown in the picture. You will miss too at the end of the book a listing of all pictures with their content and their origin. You will also not find any list with references, no subject list, no list of names, no orienting time table, no general maps related to the areas and locations mentioned in the book. This makes it very difficult to come to a sound judgment about the content of the book.

EXCITING TOPICS

Despite the above mentioned spares methodological 'outlook' the subject of the book is exciting: the photographs and the texts give the impression, that there are thousands of ruins in the southern part of Africa which stem from a time long before the eldest known high culture of Sumer (whose early period is dated back to a time about -5300, with early syllabic tablet-inscriptions from about -2700 belonging to a language with no resemblance to any other known language family). The authors are dating back some of the African findings to -50.000 and to -100.000 (cf. pp.105-106). In the context of old gold mines they report findings of old tools dated back to -200.000 or even -400.000 (cf. p.107). Details are missing. Because such time measurements are important it would be important to make these arguments very clear. Especially it would be interesting whether the main bulk of ruins stems from the time before the Toba volcano eruption or from the time after that. Additionally they point explicitly to thousands of African petroglyphs whose form show strong resemblances to sumerian symbols. They hypothesize that the people -- and their knowledge -- are connected to the old religious beliefs of the sumerian religion(s). This entails that African knowledge is been assumed to be 'transferred' to the Sumerians. An interesting hypothesis, but how can this be proved? An exchange over -- perhaps -- 60.000 or 90.000 or even more years? It is difficult to see how this could have happened. Besides this assumed relationship to the Sumerians the authors have collected many evidences of ancient ruins which all show the same structures of walls formed in circles around circles connected by roads which are always delimited by walls with a height of at least 1.5m. And -- strangely -- these walls have no entrances. The roads end up at walls. They report 500 km of roads investigated by their own. They guess, that it must be several thousands km. Alone the stones of the known roads make up a number of about 500 Million large stones. From the sheer number of these ruins the authors infer, that these ruins could not have been built up by the few people migrating from the north of Africa to the south (p.96f). Also they give some reflections about the possible 'meaning' of this circled architecture with no entrances and they propose some ideas about resonance spaces enlarging energy. Clear arguments are missing.

While the overall impression of the arguments is that of fuzziness and of a very speculative nature there remains the fact of the enormous number of ruins, of petroglyphs, of tools, old mines -- especially goldmines -- and a lack of convincing explanations. The existence of much earlier cultures than those known today as that of Sumer would be an interesting modification of the history of cultures, but would not make a great difference in the overall evolution of life on earth where 100.000 years do not mean to much. The main time scales here are counting Millions, hundreds of Millions or even Billions of years.

MANY QUESTIONS LEFT

Thus after finishing the reading of the book some new interesting ideas have come to my mind, but many unsolved questions are left too. In my impression the authors have introduced some very interesting ideas (I did not report all of them), but for me the relationship to the 'real facts' is often too weak. This weakness in speculation can weaken the importance of the real facts which are indeed challenging.

The most fascinating book about ancient civilizations I've ever read!

We constantly see shows and books about the Egyptians and other ancient civilizations, but south Africa has been totally ignored and I don't understand why. It's a massive site land-wise, and chock full of mysterious structures that are carelessly being destroyed by the people and the government. I hope Michael Tellinger's books and you tube videos bring enough worldwide attention to this area that the destruction will stop and the intensive investigation will begin, he and Johan Heine sure can't do it alone in their lifetimes, they've barely scratched the surface. If you think Gobekli Tepi is mind-boggling, wait til you see these amazing photos and stories. I've got a library of books on Egyptian ruins, but I'm tired of reading the same thing over and over so this was a real treat to see an entirely new area of the world being discovered with no explanations for what took place or by how many millions of humans in the far distant past and will be browsed through over and over. Many full-page color photos that help to show the extent of the mystery there. The issue price on the book was 29, I found mine on e-bay for WAY less than these sellers. You also might find one at a used book store or library for less, I highly recommend it to everyone who can get their hands on a copy :=).

About the Author

James G. McGann, Ph.D. is the Assistant Director of the International Relations Program at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also a Senior Fellow and Director of the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia. For the last 20 years he has served as President of McGann Associates, a program and management consulting firm specializing in the challenges facing think tanks, policymakers, international organizations and philanthropic institutions.

Dr. McGann has served as a consultant and advisor to the World Bank, United Nations, United States Agency for International Development, Soros, Hewlett and Gates Foundations and foreign governments on the role of nongovernmental, public policy organizations in civil society. He has served as the Senior Vice-President for the Executive Council on Foreign Diplomats, the public policy program officer for The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Assistant Director of the Institute of Politics, John F. Bad Sample.

Didn`t buy the book because the sample only contained a forward of the book. Why offer a sample if your not giving a good sample of the book.
Now, the forward offered a in-depth look at the evolving world of think tanks through a clear, thought out approach. Which is why I wanted to read the sample but unfortunately that didn`t work out.

THE MOST COMPELLING RECENT SCIENTIFIC CRITIQUE OF DARWINIAN EVOLUTION

Behe wrote in the Preface to this 1996 book, "Darwin was ignorant of the reason for variation within a species... It was once expected that the basis of life would be exceedingly simple. That expectation has been smashed... the elegance and complexity of biological systems at the molecular level have paralyzed science's attempt to account for the origin of specific, complex biomolecular systems..." (Pg. x) He clarifies, "I have no reason to doubt that the universe is ... billions of years old ... I find the idea of common descent ... fairly convincing, and have no particular reason to doubt it... Although Darwin's mechanism ... might explain many things... I do not believe it explains molecular life." (Pg. 5-6) [NOTE: page numbers refer to the 307-page hardcover editon.]

He notes, "Darwin convinced many of his readers that an evolutionary pathway leads from the simplest light-sensitive spot to the sophistaced camera-eye of man. But the question of how vision began remained unanswered... he did not even try to explain where his starting point---the relatively simple light-sensitive spot---came from." (Pg. 18) He states, "Each of the anatomical steps and structures that Darwin thought were so simple actually involves staggeringly complicated biochemical processes... Anatomy is... irrelevant to the question of whether evolution could take place on the molecular level. So is the fossil record... Until recently, evolutionary biologists could be unconcerned with the molecular details of life because so little was known about them. Now the black box of the cell has been opened, and the infinitesimal world that stands revealed must be explained." (Pg. 22)

He asks, "What type of biological system could not be formed by 'numerous, successive, slight modifications'? ... a system that is irreducibly complex... composed of several well-matched, interacting parts ... wherein the removal of any one of the parts causes the system to effectively cease functioning." (Pg. 39)For an example, "What components are needed for a cilium to work? Ciliary motion certainly requires microtubules... Additionally it requires a motor... it requires linkers to tug on neighboring strands... All of these parts are required... Just as a mousetrap does not work unless all of its constituent parts are present, ciliary motion simply does not exist in the absence of microtubules, connectors, and motors. Therefore we can conclude that the cilium is irreducibly complex---an enormous monkey wrench thrown into its presumed gradual, Darwinian evolution." (Pg. 64-65) He adds, "Other examples of irreducible complexity abound, including aspects of DNA replication, electron transport, telomere synthesis, photosynthesis, transcription regulation, and more." (Pg. 160)

He asserts, "Neither of Darwin's starting points---the origin of life, and the origin of vision---has been accounted for by his theory. Darwin never imagined the exquisitely profound complexity that exists even at the most basic levels of life." (Pg. 173) But he also adds, "To say that Darwinian evolution cannot explain everything in nature is not to say that evolution, random mutation, and natural selection do not occur... I believe the evidence strongly supports common descent. But the root question remains unanswered: What has caused complex systems to form?" (Pg. 175-176)

He argues, "Molecular evolution is not based on scientific authority. There is no publication in the scientific literature... that describes how molecular evolution of any real, complex, biochemical system either did occur or even might have occurred. There are assertions that such evolution occurred, but absolutely none are supported by pertinent experiments or calculations... the assertion of Darwinian molecular evolution is merely bluster." (Pg. 185-186) Instead, he endorses the concept of "intelligent design" ["the purposeful arrangement of parts"; pg. 193]. He notes that Kenneth Miller [Finding Darwin's God] "is like myself a Roman Catholic, and he makes the point ... that belief in evolution is quite compatible with his religious views. I agree ... that they are compatible..." (Pg. 239)

This book is absolute "MUST READING" for anyone even remotely interested in evolutionary theory, or in the Creation/Evolution/Intelligent Design controversies---regardless of which side (if any) of the debate one is on.

About the Author

Atul Kochhar is one of the finest Indian chefs in the country, renowned for the vibrancy of his food and the subtlety of his spice mixes. He was one of the first two Indian chefs to be awarded a Michelin star and he has become the recognisable face of Indian cuisine on television. His innovative take on food has taken him through two whole series of the BBC's Great British Menu and continue to win him an admiring public through regular TV appearances, including regular stints on BBC's Saturday Kitchen.
