Adequate introduction to perspectives on peace & justice

Purchased this book for a class. It provides a solid overview of contemporary issues, although I find a number of Thompson's conclusions dubious. (His confidence in international/multilateral institutions and agreements is unwarranted; the assertion that "American colonialism seems indistinguishable from European colonialism" (p. 16) ignores the far larger scope of the latter.) Published in 2003, the material is somewhat out of date (i.e. no analysis of the impact of the U.S. invasion & occupation of Iraq). The synopsis of Catholic Social Teaching isn't bad, although the book certainly could have devoted much more space to the topic. (For a comprehensive treatment of Catholic Social Teaching, I recommend the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church.)

It's the bullseye book I've been looking for

Uncompromising, fearless, and accurate--this is the one I've waited for. Finally, a Christian who boldly tackles issues like sweatshops, the World Bank and IMF, militarization and its effects on poverty, America's role in arms sales to the Third World, the environment, and world peace. The facts, figures, and graphs are there for anyone who wants them, but it's not a dull government-style book. It's rebellious and astounding, and makes you feel like taking action. It's also loaded with relevant scripture examinations and lists of resources (organizations, books, nonprofit agencies) who attend to the issues Thompson raises.
Enough with silly sunday School classes about stories and opinions; THIS should be the textbook of sunday School classes of the truly justice-minded churches of America.

A great Introduction

This book by Prof. Thompson fills a gap in Catholic teaching on peace and justice. I would hope that this book gets wide circulation among clergy, especially deacons in the Catholic Church. This book gives a very good historical overview of the wide range of issues that Christian peacemakers face in the world.
As good as this book is as an introduction, I think an exploration of the fundamental principles of Catholic Social teaching would round off the presentation. Also, there is a need to discuss practical application of Catholic teaching such as Princpled Nonviolence and grassroots praxis.
The range and depth of the book is a welcome addition to a growing attempt by Catholic theologians and ethicists to apply the Gospel to the "signs of the times". Kudos for a job well done ! One will eagerly await the second volume of Christian praxis.

Saronna Maynard and Duncan Trushenko have very little in common, except for living in the same house. Saronna grew up in a walled house in a small village outside of New Jerusalem, the largest city on Krueger's World. Duncan grew up on many worlds, and has traveled the galaxy. He is dumbstruck to return from a business trip and find that his father has purchased a companion for him.

Saronna is terrified to be sold into an off-world household, but in a very short time she realizes she might be better off--and safer--in Duncan's house than in her father's. For one thing, Duncan doesn't believe in witches. Also, the more she's with Duncan, the harder it is for her to believe all men are as evil as her mother taught her. But safer or not, Saronna is still intent on keeping her secrets. After all, she's still on Krueger's World.

About the Author
Carmen Webster Buxton was born in Honolulu, and had a bi-coastal childhood, as her father was in the US Navy. She now lives in Maryland, with her husband and a cat with the unlikely name of Carbomb.

Captivating SciFi Romance

Like all of Buxton’s books, Saronna’s Gift is nothing short of captivating. The reader gets sucked into the storyline set in an entirely different world with different types of people, technology, clashing cultures, etc. Unlike Buxton’s other books, Saronna’s Gift predominately evolves around a romantic storyline. We see two mindsets colliding – a rich, smart, modern man and an uneducated, degraded woman. Within the relationship of Saronna and Duncan, the reader gets to follow how each person handles the conflict between each other, family relationships, friendships, and religion.

There are two main perspectives on Krueger’s World: the dominant man’s side and the submissive woman’s side. Saronna’s side gives the perspective of the women who have been “tricked” into submission and sold into other households, never having any rights of their own. Men take sex by “enforcing their rights” and discarding the women to take another whenever they please. When Saronna is sold, she is thrown into a new household where men and women are seen as equals. Moreover, Saronna is treated with respect from Duncan, the man with whom she falls in love, and Duncan’s father, the man to whom she was sold. The reader gets to follow Saronna’s inner turmoil as she learns what it’s like to live as an equal (and be free from restrictions), but still keep the morals and beliefs of her people.

It’s definitely an interesting SciFi/Romantic storyline. The contrasting backgrounds of both individuals make for a very complex relationship. Not only did I like reading about how Saronna handles her struggles, but also how Duncan handles his struggles as he tries to court her. I give it five stars for creativity because I have never read a SciFi romance set in a future world with the oppression solely based on gender. It’s a very feministic but still romantic storyline. I was definitely not disappointed for another one of Buxton’s books.

Lovers fighting crossed-stars out in the galaxy

I can probably best express my enjoyment of this book by saying that I was surprised when I came back to write a review and saw that it had 475 pages. I whipped through it so fast that it seemed much shorter.

This novel takes place in Buxton's ThreeCon universe, and is a science fiction romance novel with intercultural misunderstandings and secrets (the gift in the title) complicating the couple's relationship. There is no explicit sex. The action takes place on Krueger's World, a planet named for the leader of a group of conservative Christians who settled the planet long before. I presume that they see themselves as the New Israel, and have created an ersatz Eternal Israel by reading the Hebrew scriptures without any sense of historical context, and with a very strong patriarchy. They have declined ThreeCon's overtures, except to allow for a trading zone of ThreeCon citizens who want to take advantage of the planet's favorable location as a transshipment point, and as a tax dodge. (I will say, parenthetically, that I don't care for people who live abroad for tax reasons, but expect their citizenship to entitle them to call in the calvary when they get into trouble.) But I digress.

Among these is Vladimir Trushenko, CEO of the Cameron Trushenko company. Vladimir is living happily with his beautiful Kreugerian concubine, Naomi, while his estranged archeologist wife is off anywhere else. Their marriage was arranged, and it has been a financial success if a personal disaster - but both partners are happy as long as they are spending their riches on separate planets. Naomi is lonely, and so Vladimir purchases another Kreugerian woman, Saronna, as a companion, nominally a concubine for his soon-to-return son, Duncan. If nothing else, she is a hint to Duncan that his parents are anxiously awaiting grandchildren. Vladimir means well, he purposely buys a woman who is an elderly spinster in her early twenties, figuring that he is saving her from an awkward situation. Her father has equally mixed reasons for selling her to an off-worlder.

Duncan and Saronna hit it off, and true love seems in the offing after a leisurely courtship in their luxurious off-worlders' quarter, but the situation destabilizes the seemingly happy and peaceful lives of the people around them. Everyone means well, everyone is acting according to their notions of honorable behavior, but the situation soon reveals the fault lines of assumptions, misinterpretations, and cultural clashes that create havoc. Kreugerian culture is more complex than the outsiders understood. Duncan's attempts to develop his relationship with Saronna and her family involves him in a potentially deadly feud, and by the end of the book, the Trushenkos' might as well have an ambulance idling outside the house. Saronna has to decide if she has to honor her hereditary obligations, and how to do this and enjoy her love with Duncan. (By the way, there is not explicit sex.) The ending resolving romantic conflicts heighten's social and political ones. I wonder if there is going to be a sequel following up on the later consequences. The problem with romances is that one gets to love the characters, but it is difficult to have a romantic series and stay with the same people. As we have seen in history, a simple desire to trade, an intention to lead parallel lives rarely turns out to be simple.

ThreeCon refers to the Third Confederation of Planets, which one might liken to the present day liberal democracies or the European Union. In this universe, human being long since spread out on a variety of planets which have formed confederations that have dissolved. The highly advanced ThreeCon seeks out other human worlds and offers them membership and technological assistance, but allows them to refuse. If the world declines membership, but allows some sort of diplomatic contact, ThreeCon has the muscle to protect its citizens, but generally does not interfere in the affairs of the other world (except for a little covert interference from time to time.)

I want to state that I do know Carmen, but I wouldn't review her books if I didn't enjoy them.

New author I will read more of.

Ms Buxton is not a new author. She has several books to her credit. This is the first of hers that I have read. I really liked it. The premise is different than most Sci-Fi romances with no abductions, not much swearing and no graphic sex. The lack of the last two was greatly appreciated although I would have preferred that she not us the name of who I worship as a swear word. The novel approach of no abduction was a delightful change.

The focus of the plot is the clash of cultures, one being an extremely repressive one in which women are chattel and a subculture within being a cult. The challenge of the main characters was understanding each other as well as Saronna's growth and emergence from the way she had been raised and Duncan dealing with her secrets and the culture she came from. I enjoyed it immensely and will find other books by the author.

The editing was well done with nothing pulling me out of the story as I read. Thank you Ms Buxton, well done

I found this to be one of the most informative books I have ever read on country blues, breaking it down by regions of the south and containing many in-depth biographies of several seminal blues artists. Essential.

BACK TO THE BASICS - Best history of the unparalleled drama of the first Delta Blues Folks

Samuel Charters was the greatest scholar of the delta blues movement and his work had enormous on the music of the 1960's. One wishes that the four volume audio recordings entitled "The Country Blues" were back in print, and more readily available then they are at this point. If you wish to learn about this unparalleled chapter in the history of music, you cannot go wrong here, the authoritative, foundational work on the subject.

I bought a book some years ago whilst living in England called The Sunday Times ABC Diet and Body Plan which to me is still one of the top books that I have come across in this area.

When this book was published the blurbs rated it highly and when I came across a copy a little while ago I met it with great expectations.

Alas, while it is comprehensive overall and is well written in a boring formal way, it really does not contain much at all of anything that the other does not cover.

It is rather a safe book advising people who wish to embark on an exercise program to consult a doctor first before doing so but to me it is much more important to listen to your body. If it wants to exercise it will do and you know when you have overdone it.

I am a bit of a sceptic when it comes to listening to doctors because most of them never know you as a person well enough to provide you with individual diagnosis and accurate precriptions of activities.

But anyway. It is OK but just that. Consider the content but in the end you need to decide what is best for you.
