From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8?Jennie McGrady, 16, is a self-styled amateur detective whose skills are put to the ultimate test when her 5-year-old brother, Nick, disappears. The neighborhood is scoured, the police are notified, and Jennie's extended family rallies to support her mother as they wait out the ordeal. Strange circumstances and false clues abound, including the arrival of a suspicious youth in the house across the street, the discovery that two other people are missing, and the obscure revelation that Jennie's absent father has been given a new identity to protect him from unnamed enemies. Love interest appears in Jennie's attraction to a police officer, as well as in the eventual return of her boyfriend, who had been in Alaska for the summer but comes home to Oregon to be by her side. Most unsatisfying is the leisurely sense of time in a tale that should be fraught with urgency and with the strain of great emotion, as the likelihood looms that Nick has been kidnapped and possibly killed. Events mount to a melodramatic conclusion when the insane perpetrator forces Jennie's Mustang off a rainy road and later takes the teen at gunpoint to a secluded cabin where the captives are finally found. Despite a happy ending, readers are left with a sense of too many loose ends and too many stilted emotions.?Susan W. Hunter, Riverside Middle School, Springfield, VT

From Booklist
Gr. 6^-9. In the fifth book in the Jennie McGrady Mysteries series, the irrepressible heroine's sleuthing skills are once again tested, this time when her five-year-old brother and one of his playmates disappear. When Jennie and her boyfriend are nearly killed by a driver who deliberately forces their car off the road, the tension heightens. The mystery doesn't require a lot of analysis to enjoy, but the suspense builds nicely, there are suspects aplenty to rule out, and the special relationship Jennie has with her grandmother, a sleuth in her own right and a woman Jennie believes has a direct line to God, seems genuine. The Perfect Mystery
By A Customer
My cousin loaned me this book along with Dying To Win and In Too Deep. I started reading it as soon as I got home. From the very beginning there's a mystery. The first page makes you want to keep on reading so that you'll find out what's going to happen. When you read this book you have all of these guesses on who's the criminal, and in the end, you figure out that none of them were right. Just when you think you know exactly who the criminal is, you either start to suspect someone else or Jennie has a good reason for the criminal ot to be him/her. I never wanted to stop reading this book because I had no idea who the real criminal was. In the end, the criminal turned out to be someone wha wasn't even on my suspect list. This mystery is full of danger and suspense. Many times Jennie almosts gets herself killed while investigating. If you LOVE mysteries like Nancy Drew, add this series to your list of favorite books. I wouldn't reccomend reading this book at night because eventually you'll get too tired and have to stop.

The book Without A Trace by author Patricia H. Rushford is really interesting and mysterious. It includes a girl named Jennie who is willing to solve any mystery. In addition Jennie is really worried for her brother Nick who is lost, and the police can't find him.
The book is really entertaining for lots of reasons. It made me curious to find out what really happen. The book doesn't tell you what happens right away. It tries to confuse you to make you more curios than what you already are. Eventually it made me feel like a detective because it puts me in the situation.
I recommended you read "Without a Trace" if you like reading mystery books th t gives you specific clues to find out what really happen.

Gr 1-3-Cartoon characters speak directly to readers as they explore the five body systems. For example, in Nervous System, Nelly Neuron follows the path a signal travels from a finger on a hot stove to the brain and back to tell the hand to pull away in less than a second. The clever illustrations are presented in a comic-book style and include humorous elements: blood cells boarding a train representing a bloodstream with packages of waste and nutrients, a bespectacled pea working his way through the digestive system, etc. The illustrations also incorporate diagrams that identify system parts and functions, such as how tendons and ligaments work to keep joints stable and help move bones. Simple sentences above and below the image panels provide additional information in these basic and engaging introductions.α(c) Copyright 2011. As usual this "First Graphics" is simple in design with usually 4 panels, 1 word bubble and 4 text blocks per two page spread. A great introduction to the graphic format and the topic at the same time.

Blitzed: Drugs in Nazi Germany, by Norman Ohler

'The most brilliant and fascinating book I have read in my entire life' Dan Snow 'A huge contribution... remarkable' Antony Beevor, BBC RADIO 4 'Extremely interesting ... a serious piece of scholarship, very well researched' Ian Kershaw The sensational German bestseller on the overwhelming role of drug-taking in the Third Reich, from Hitler to housewives. The Nazis presented themselves as warriors against moral degeneracy. Yet, as Norman Ohler's gripping bestseller reveals, the entire Third Reich was permeated with drugs: cocaine, heroin, morphine and, most of all, methamphetamines, or crystal meth, used by everyone from factory workers to housewives, and crucial to troops' resilience - even partly explaining German victory in 1940. The promiscuous use of drugs at the very highest levels also impaired and confused decision-making, with Hitler and his entourage taking refuge in potentially lethal cocktails of stimulants administered by the physician Dr Morell as the war turned against Germany. While drugs cannot on their own explain the events of the Second World War or its outcome, Ohler shows, they change our understanding of it. Blitzed forms a crucial missing piece of the story.

Absolutely Incredible Jaw Dropper of a Book~!
By Irene Daniels
This history book is an incredible eye-opener~! Most readers of WW-II and Nazi Germany histories are familiar with Hitler and his Dr. Morell's "vitamin" injections, (not to mention plenty of cocaine too), and perhaps even that Goring was a morphine addict. But how about the fact that almost all of the Reich's soldiers were tweakers~?! Yup, Nazi soldiers were en masse, high as a kite on meth-amphetamine~! It was widely marketed throughout Germany to the civilian and military populations alike in the form of easy to ingest capsules. The author's historical research, and the evidence he dredges up, are irrefutable. And this is only one of the countless shocking insights into the subject matter: as the title says, "drugs in Nazi Germany". The entire book was one jaw-dropping page turner after another. The print is quite large, btw, making reading the book easy for most people. There is a fascinating revelation of stuff that went on that one never imagined would be going on in a modern state, on practically every page. Then again, we shouldn't be surprised, I guess, that a regime that gassed and shot civilians in a systematic manner, would also systematically dope its own soldiers in order to extract from their bodies the maximum performance possible during critical periods of time on the battlefield. One photo in the book, (that speaks better than words), shows German troops asleep where they finally "crashed", after being high on crystal meth for the 17 days of the offensive against France in 1940. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who's at all interested in the role of drugs in Nazi Germany, both before and after the beginning of WW-II.

Blitzed
By S Riaz
In this fascinating account of drug use in the Third Reich, author Norman Ohler takes us on a journey through the history of Germany and explains how, and why, it became a centre of pharmaceutical research. Although the National Socialist Party presented themselves as clean cut, and Hitler praised abstinence, it is clear that much of the Nazi hierarchy – including Hitler himself – were very reliant on drugs and, indeed, that their use was widespread both in the armed forces and in civilian life.

Between the wars, Berlin, in particular, exploded in cultural excess and escapism, with drug use becoming prevalent. Ohler examines the use of a drug, called Pervitin, in particular. So widespread was this drug that it was even included in chocolates, advertised for housewives needing a little help to cope with the housework. It was known as the ‘people’s drug’ and was said to banish sleep and hunger, while promising euphoria. Now, it is better known by the name of crystal meth…

Pervitin is linked to a senior staff doctor, named Professor Dr Otto F Ranke, director of the Research Institute of Defence Physiology. Ranke was involved in suggesting the drug could boost the performance of the army, which were under incredible pressure to perform, with Hitler making unprecedented demands. Indeed, the author suggests that the real enemy were not the British or Russian troops, but tiredness, and Pervitin offered a cure for exhaustion. Too late, Ranke saw the danger signs of addiction and side effects, but by then the army were marching for days and, while witnesses saw the invaders as virtually super-human, the troops themselves also began, dangerously, to believe in their own image.

Speaking of delusion, a large part of this book looks at Patient A, or Hitler, and his relationship with his personal physician, Dr Theodor Morrell. Unlike Stalin, who was happy to leave running the war to his Generals, Hitler wanted to be in charge of everything. He gradually lost touch with reality – his delusions and fantasies causing him to be dangerously reckless. Meanwhile, afraid of being ill and unable to attend meetings, Hitler demanded that Morrell keep him healthy and active. He may have failed at helping Hitler stay healthy, but he was always there with a ‘pick me up’ in the form of an injection, if Hitler felt tired, unwell or out of sorts. Ohler tells of one meeting with Mussolini when, fortified by medication, Hitler ranted incessantly for over three hours – calling the meeting a resounding success when, in fact, nobody else had managed to interrupt his endless flow of words.

This really is a very readable account of a fascinating period in history. The amount of drugs that Hitler was taking by the end of the war is truly staggering – indeed, when he travelled by train, there had to be regular stops so that Morrell could administer injections. Side effects of drugs used by both Hitler himself and the armed forces, who had tablets doled out to them like sweeties, eventually saw the initial excitement of enthusiasm, energy and excitement, collapsing in paranoia and exhaustion. This is an interesting and little explored aspect of the war, which really leaves you reeling in disbelief. I highly recommend this as a very engaging read.

Does not have Connect access or advanced Kindle features.
By Steven A. Leahy
The book itself is fine, but I strongly recommend against purchasing or renting it from Amazon. Unless the seller specifies otherwise, it will not have a Connect access code, which means you cannot do coursework if your professor uses Connect, without paying for the book twice. It also does not support Kindle text-to-speech or VoiceOver in the Kindle app.

More&More is an art and research project that explores the language and mechanics of global trade, container shipping, and the exchange of goods. It questions a mercantile structure that by necessity disallows the presence of ocean as a real space in order to flatten the world into a Pangaea of capital. The project is presented in two volumes, released in conjunction with an exhibition of Marina Zurkow’s work (with collaborators Sarah Rothberg, Surya Mattu, and others) at bitforms gallery in New York City in February 2016. This book, More&More (The Invisible Oceans), is a catalog of the exhibition, featuring many full-color images of the art on display (including video stills, bespoke bathing suits, and fungal sculptures), as well as an introduction by Marina Zurkow and a conversation between Zurkow and international curator Kathleen Forde.

One part Ripley's Believe It or not, One part National Geographic Magazine, and Entirely Enjoyable
By rebogamy
The world is still filled with interesting, exotic, and improbable places. In the twenty-first century, when you can wash down your KFC chicken with a Starbucks vente frappucino in Beijing, it is refreshing to re-discover the awe and mystery of travel. This is a perfect book for a two minute break whenever your spirit needs boosting. Whether you find Jeremy Bentham's mummified corpse at University College London; the Beer Bottle Temple in Sisaket, Thailand; or the Canadian Potato Museum in D'Leary, PEI, you can return to your drab, dreary existence with the assurance that the World is "not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose". Buy this book! Revel in the places that you've seen! Revel in the places that you'd like to see! You won't be disappointed.

A very interesting read, even if you're not actually able to visit many of the sites described!
By Christopher E
I bought this for a 30-year old nephew whose county count was, I believe, pushing 40 about a year ago, and I think it may satisfy even him. (He’s the hardest to buy for member of the entire family!)

I read a short description of the book in the travel section of the SF Chronicle a few weeks ago, and made the purchase based on that. Well, that combined with my sister verifying that her son might actually appreciate this book!

There are many hundreds of places and things described over about 450 pages, with most including a photo, and the balance a drawing. I think the only things without a graphic are the short, “Also in or near…” entries. Those graphics add interest and tend to draw you in, encouraging you to read the piece about whatever is depicted graphically.

The book must weigh something like 2 pounds – just guessing – meaning you might not be likely to pack it in your suitcase. However, it’s easy enough to take digital photos of any entries you may want to have easy access to on a trip. It’s printed on heavy paper, and I like that the pages are a pleasing, very light buff color, much nicer than stark white. Point being, it’s aesthetically a very nicely put together book.

Because I bought this as a gift, I've looked through it closely but have not read it cover to cover. The entries seem to be written for a variety of readers and travelers, but certainly far from the lowest common denominator. It’s not a typical travel book! I don’t find every entry to be about a fascinating item, but a great many are, and possibly none whatsoever are dull. Even things that might not seem of particular interest based on the heading end up proving to be interesting when you get into the text. That said, there are items about things I have no interest in seeing, e.g., “Lake Monsters of the USA,” but there don’t seem to be many of that sort of thing included. As with "Lake Monsters," even if you (or a recipient) aren't likely to visit many of the places described, I think for many curious people this would make for an interesting read even without the travel element.

It's not a perfect book, and I don't think any one book can be perfect for all readers, but I do think it's very good and I can easily recommend it for anyone who might be potentially interested. Given the quality of the contents and of the physical item itself, I am very pleased with the price. Easy 5 stars and recommendation!

A book as rich and unexpected as the world it covers
By Mark Mulvey
This book exceeded my already higher-than-average expectations. It's gorgeously designed and PACKED with interestingness on every page. The page layouts are complex and varied too, so it's fun to flip through and land on random sections about odd, wondrous places and artifacts halfway around the world (or in your own hometown!). So the act of making your way through the book feels like the kind of discovery and adventure covered in the content itself. Brilliant.

I pre-ordered this because I was already a huge fan of the website and decided to support the project. I figured at the very least I'd have a gift ready for the holidays. But I am absolutely keeping this for myself, and will probably buy another copy for one of my family members soon. The book inspires you to venture out and explore, and reminds you that even in this era of Google Earth and Twitter there is plenty of mystery left out there that's waiting to be stumbled upon.
