I have luckily never had any connection with drugs, and knew nothing about the devastation it causes to families and the drug addicts themselves. It is a very strong story, honest and shows the reality of a drug life that few knows. I will recommend the book to everyone to read. I will go so far and say: It is a must!

The coauthors of 1989's Decision Traps offer a clear, straightforward explanation of how managers should perform one of their most basic tasks: making a decision. Russo, professor of marketing and behavior science at Cornell, and Shoemaker, research director of Wharton's Mack Center for Technology and Innovation, break their method into four steps: framing decisions, i.e., factoring in difficulties like information overload and the "galloping rate of change," and thereby determining which choices need to be addressed and which ones don't; gathering real intelligence, not just information that will support internal biases; coming to conclusions, i.e., assessing how one's company acts on the intelligence gathered; and learning from experience. The authors walk readers through each of the steps. Unlike many business books, this one is akin to a workbook, providing how-tos, case studies and worksheets so readers can put their ideas into play immediately. The authors highlight key concepts, and they even show an occasional humorous side. However, they stress that even improving the way one goes about making decisions won't guarantee that they'll be the right ones. Decisions still have to be executed successfully, and luck is always a factor. Still, with better decision-making skills, the odds are bound to go up. Russo and Schoemaker follow their first book, Decision Traps (1989), with an outstanding book on the process of decision-making. The authors are business experts who honed their skills advising, consulting, and teaching at top national business schools and multinational corporations. As they posit, managers and executives may be well versed on intelligence gathering, reframing issues, group decision making, and developing environments to enhance feedback, but it is easy to fall into the trap of embracing an outcome-focused process. In other words, if the project made money, the decision making process was good, and if it lost money, it was bad. But that is an ill-advised way of looking at things. There are external factors, such as luck, that can influence and determine an outcome beyond the control of the decision maker. This book makes a comprehensive analytical tool, with excellent case studies, exercises, evaluators, and notes. It transcends many of the ordinary organizational behavior theory and strategy books on the shelves, and managers, executives, and business-school students who read it will be put through their paces. Excellent Book on How to Refine and Execute Excellent Business Decisions.

Absolutely fantastic book about how we can refine our decision making processes to make them more powerful and effective, and less vulnerable to a variety of biases.

I love the multiple anecdotes and examples the author provides of the common fallacies to effective decision making. The author does a great job of keeping the reader not only entertained but intrigued and informed throughout the text.

Highly recommended for any business manager or other individual looking to refine and develop a well calculated, thorough, and thoughtful decision making process.

I was assigned this book as part of an MBA class, and with the possible exception of Daniel Goleman's work, it is the most impactful text I've read as part of this program. I found it to be a really readable book with effective techniques that I started using right away. A great resource for anyone that participates in decision making or process changes at work, with many ideas that could be extrapolated to personal life decisions as well. I've already recommended this to several coworkers.

I really liked this book because of the research

I really liked this book because of the research. The stories they told about other peoples problem solving and mistakes were pretty good. Decision making is too big of a subject for one book. I wanted a book that covered decision making and shopping. Most of my decisions involve buying things. I couldn't find a book like that so I wrote the book entitled Guided Buying. It's available on this web site as an e-book.

Terry Smith is Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory in the Department of the History of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh. In 2010 he was named Australia Council Visual Arts Laureate by the Australian Government, and won the Mather Award for art criticism conferred by the College Art Association (USA). He is the author of Making the Modern: Industry, Art and Design in America (University of Chicago Press, 1993); The Architecture of Aftermath (University of Chicago Press, 2006), What is Contemporary Art? (University of Chicago Press, 2009), Contemporary Art: World Currents (Laurence King and Pearson/Prentice-Hall, 2011) and Thinking Contemporary Curating (Independent Curators International, 2012).

About the Author
Terry Smith served as an infantryman for 30 years in the Army Reserve. This included three and a half years on full time duty in the Regular Army, from 1970 to 1973, after volunteering for service in South Vietnam. Following training as a tropical warfare adviser, he arrived in South Vietnam on 1 July 1972 where he joined the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam. In Vietnam, he served with the Phuoc Tuy Training Battalion of the United States Army Vietnam Forces Armee Nationale Khmer (FANK) Training Command, until the completion of that programme in November 1972 and thereafter, with the Jungle Warfare Training Centre at Van Kiep. Following the withdrawal of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam from South Vietnam on 18 December 1972, he completed his full time military service with the 5th Battalion the Royal Australian Regiment, before returning to civilian life in December 1973. He was appointed a Member of the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire in 1977 and a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2010.

Claire Bishop is the author of "Installation Art: A Critical History" and a contributor to many art journals, including "ArtForum", "Flash Art", and "October". She is a Lecturer in History of Art at the University of Warwick.

Hans Ulrich Obrist is a curator, critic, and historian of art. He is codirector of the Serpentine Gallery, London. He was curator of the Swiss Pavilion at the fourteenth International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.

Boris Groys is Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies at New York University. He is the author of many books, including "Ilya Kabakov: The Man Who Flew into Space from His Apartment" (2006) and "Art Power" (2008), both published by the MIT Press.

About the Author

Tom Altstiel (M.A., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is an owner/partner of Prom Krog Altstiel, Inc. (PKA Marketing), an integrated marketing communications service provider. Altstiel is responsible for developing creative strategy and tactics for digital, print, broadcast, and video as well as client service and new business development. Altstiel has developed creative work for hundreds of consumer and business-to-business clients including Toyota, Johnson Controls, Eaton, 3M, Evinrude, and Snap-On Tools. He has won over 250 local, regional and national awards for creative excellence. Since 1999, Altstiel has been an adjunct instructor at Marquette University, teaching Copywriting, Advanced Copywriting, Campaigns and Principles of Advertising. He received the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Part Time Faculty at Marquette. Follow him on Linked In.



Jean Grow (Ph.D. University of Wisconsin–Madison; M.A., University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, B.F.A., School of the Art Institute of Chicago) is an Associate Professor of Advertising and Director of the Fine Arts Program at Marquette University. Grow has won numerous fellowships and awards including: AEJMC’s Institute for Diverse Leadership in Journalism and Communication Fellowship (2015-16); a Visiting Professorship, University of Modena, Italy (2013); the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation Research Grant (2010-2013); and the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2007). Her academic research appears in publications such as: Advertising & Society Review, Communication & Society, and International Journal of Advertising. Prior to joining the academy Jean worked as an artists’ representative with agency clients such as Leo Burnett, DDB, and JWT on brands including Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s and Zenith. Relatable material!! EASY READ!

Read this book for my advertising class and I have to say as a text book in a class was so easy to get through. The language was easy to understand they used a lot of relatable examples and even quoted from the famous series Mad Men (that takes about adverting in the 60's). Great Book! I still have it and refer to it often!!
