Great Teen Titans Story and Art

Let me start by saying that the only reason that I'm not giving it 5 stars is because this collection also includes an issue of Supergirl, and Red Robin, which I didn't like that much. As for the Teen Titans issues, they were GREAT, the art is perfect and the writer does a great job with the dialogue of every character. It has tons of action, drama (Superboy and Wonder Girl work out their feelings after his return from the dead) and humor (specially between Ravager and Damian Wayne). I would recommend this to any Teen Titans or comic book fan.

Great team book

I picked up this trade hoping to find something to read that could fill the void left by the cancellation of the Young Justice cartoon. With that said, there's isn't really much comparison between the two series, yet I find that they are equally enjoyable.

First and foremost, this is a great book to read if you've recently become a fan of Damian Wayne through the Son of Batman animated movie. He doesn't enter the story immediately, but once he does he completely shifts the dynamic of the Teen Titans and turns their little family upside-down in as very entertaining way. There is plentiful banter and lots of outright threats thrown around, particularly between Robin and Deathstroke's daughter, Rose Wilson. These are some of the most entertaining moments of the book.

Anyone else who jumps right into this without reading the previous volumes shouldn't worry, because I found everything and everyone to be properly explained without focusing too much on exposition. There's mention of a recent death or loss to the team which I don't know about, but it isn't a necessary detail to enjoy this story. Honestly, if you've watched either the old Teen Titans cartoon or Young Justice (preferably both) then you'll be perfectly fine and you'll know most of these characters already.

There is tons of action here and the artwork is great, keeping everything easy to follow and pretty to look at all the same. The dialogue is generally good with lots of witty one-liners and comebacks without overdoing it, and each character appears to come across the way you would expect them to.

I will say that the final issue collected in this trade paperback should probably be read before everything else. It focuses on Wonder Girl and seems to be the introduction of a character named Solstice who pops up here and there in the rest of the book. This Wonder Girl story is placed as the final chapter, however, which confused me for a second. Read it first, though, and everything else will be smooth reading.

This comic is pretty low, probably a 2 star, I was not impressed but it came in good condition and Amazon.com was good with the shipping. Teen Titans used to be better in the earlier 2000's.

The efficient transport of molecules is essential for the normal function of cells and organs and the design of devices for medical applications and biotechnology. Transport Phenomena in Biological Systems provides an introduction to the integrated study of transport processes and their biological applications.

The book consists of four sections, which cover physiological fluid mechanics, mass transport, biochemical interactions and reactions and the effect of mass transfer, and transport in organs and whole organisms. In order to provide students with a firm understanding of biological transport processes, engineering concepts are provided within the context of specific biological problems. Examples and problems elaborate on the concepts in the text or develop new concepts. The introductory chapter presents a brief overview of transport processes at the cell and tissue level and relevant concepts in cell biology and physiology are presented throughout the text. An appendix provides an overview of relevant mathematical concepts used in the text. The problems at the end of each chapter require either analytical solution or numerical solution using MATLAB®.

This book can be used for both introductory and advanced courses. Advanced topics covered include transport in the kidney, oxygen transport, receptor-mediated processes, cell adhesion, transport of drugs in tumors, and whole body pharmacokinetic models. References are provided for further study.

About the Author

The authors are faculty members in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University.  The authors are leaders in their respective fields of research and their research has involved various aspects of momentum and mass transport related to biological phenomena and technologies.

Terrible for a required engineering textbook

Had to get this book for a bioengineering transport class. This book is horrible. While it has interesting background physiology info, it's terrible in the engineering classroom. There are few worked examples in the book, and whatever worked examples there are skip a lot of steps. There are a lot of equation derivations, as can be expected from any engineering book, but the explanations are hit-or-misses, and sometimes difficult to grasp the concept of. There are no answers in the back of the book for you to determine if did the problems right or wrong. The answer key available separately contains a ton of errors, or again, skips a lot of steps. Though I thought it would be impossible, the explanations in the answer key are even worse than the ones available in the book.
All in all, I thought this was a terrible book.

Objective Acceleration Guide

Anyone interested in whole grade school acceleration should buy this book. It is a very accessible reference which guides the user step-by-step through the points to consider when determining whether a student should be accelerated. At the end of the evaluation, a score is generated. Based on this score, a candidate is identified as recommended or not recommended for whole grade acceleration.

There are examples for both recommended and not recommended acceleration. I, and it seems like everyone else who buys this book, wish it included a blank form, because all the forms are filled-in examples. A blank form is available separately and worthwhile, but it appears targeted to schools/districts and may only be available in sets of ten.

During a discussion with one of the authors, I asked about multiple grade skips. She answered that they recommend one grade skip at a time, but after a successful skip, the same criteria (applied at the next grade level) could be used to determine if another skip is recommended.

Belin-Blank Center Knows Giftedness.

I might be biased, but I got my TAG endorsement at the Belin-Blank Center. The BBC's reputation in Gifted Education is unparalleled.

I've used this guide twice to determine if a student is a candidate for being advanced a grade level or subject-accelerated a grade level. The guide is easy to understand, and explains in plain terms the reasoning behind eligibility. The IAS is meant to be used by an educator (preferably a gifted-and-talented teacher) to guide the staff, administration, and family through the IAS form (to be purchased separately).

I absolutely recommend this Manual. You won't find anything better!

We Cannot Conquer Death, We Can Conquer the Fear of Death

To make the most of this occasionally confusing spiritual journey, one ought to pay close attention to the introduction by Helen Kazantzakis, Kazantzakis' wife of 33 years. She tells us that, with the exception of the first chapter, REPORT TO GRECO was still in first draft form when Kazantzakis died, and that "If he had been able to rewrite this Report, he would have changed it. Exactly how, we cannot know." It is a "mixture of fact and fiction." And, finally that, if he had lived long enough, "he would have poured it . . . . into the mold of reality."
She also states that his times (i.e. the sequence of events as he relates them) are wrong. In fact, if you read a bibliography of his works, you will find that both "Zorba" and "The Odyssey, a Modern Sequel." were written much earlier in his life than one would infer from what Kazantzakis has written in this book.
Whatever it is, REPORT TO GRECO is not an autobiography. If this is the case, what then, is it? I believe it to be the story of one man's lifelong search for his own raison d'etre. For many years he didn't seem to be consciously aware of his own motivation.
His quest led him first to the Christian Saints and Christ; then to his teacher, the French philosopher Henri Bergson; then to the philosophic teachings of Nietzsche; then to Buddha and Lenin; and finally to the Odysseus within himself. Dominating all of these was his own Cretan soul. Each time he moved from one philosophy or set of teachings to the next, he thought that the new one was the answer he sought, and that he was discarding the old. What he finally came to realize was that, all along, he had been building, not rejecting. The culmination of this search came with his sequel to Homer's "Odyssey."
Kazantzakis was a child of Crete, and it was to Crete that he always returned for rejuvenation. It was also the spirit of Crete and his Cretan forebears that infused all his works. According to him, his works went through a sort of internal germination period, and only when THEY were ready to be written could he begin to write. This was particularly so when he wrote "Zorba, the Greek." Zorba was a real person who, in the three months that Kazantzakis and Zorba spent together, had taught Kazantzakis "how to live and how to love life." Kazantzakis says that after he heard that Zorba had died,it took months before the story of Zorba allowed itself to be written,
I would love to have been able to experience Crete with the eyes and soul of Kazantzakis. Whin I visited the site of Knossos, I saw archeological ruins and reconstructions, mosaics and frescoes, pots and statuary, ancient cart roads, what may or may not have been part of the famous labyrinth, and the religiously symbolic double axe. I'm afraid, though, that I only saw them as objects. When Kazantzakis would visit Knossos, which he frequently did throughout his life, he would feel its mystery. As an example, in a fresco of a flying fish (dolphin?), he sensed both the evolutionary urge inherent in lower animal orders, and a possible source of man's desire to always ascend. Had I read REPORT TO GRECO before my visit to Crete, perhaps I, too, might have been prepared to see and feel that which lay beneath the surface. Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps one must be a true son of Crete to share this sort of experience with Kazantzakis.
From the many conclusions that Kazantzakis was able to draw from his life-long search, I'd like to quote just a few.
On death: "It is true that we cannot conquer death. We can however conquer the fear of death."
On freedom: ". . . . The man who either hopes for heaven or fears hell cannot be free."
On love: "Perfect love exists between two people only when each addresses the other with 'O myself'"
As one might expect, Kazantzakis expands on these themes which are but a few among many. There is much food for thought in this book.
It is also my opinion that Kazantzakis never lost his way, although many critics seem to think he did. Somewhere in the book he states that he took a path similar to that of a boat tacking into the wind, tacking first to the right, then to the left, but always gaining on his objective.
He must have done something right in the way he lived his life, because his only true regret when he knew that he was dying was that he didn't have time to complete his planned projects. "Oh for a little time, just enough to let me finish my work. Afterwards let Charon come." A little time to finish and then on to his maker.
I feel that neither I, nor any reviewer for that matter can do REPORT TO GRECO justice. It would take the soul of a born and bred Cretan to begin to do so. There's so much here to be read, contemplated, and absorbed that only a cover to cover reading can begin to reveal its magic.

A literary masterpiece

I have read the book in both the original Greek and the translated version. The translated version is exceptional which is a rarity in literature. The book is a quasi-autobiography of Nikos Kazantzakis but the main theme is not his life. It's the spiritual struggle of man to find his place on earth and to understand the concept of a God. A deeply spiritual person, Kazantzakis, struggled throughout his life trying to draw the right path for him. He traveled throughout the world in order to witness how other cultures dealt with the same notions. He returns home at the end because the call of his birth land is too strong. The book is written supposedly as an account to his grandfather, an arab pirate, but a view also exists that it is a report to El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos), a famous Greek artist (1541-1614). Kazantzakis was a great admirer of El Greco and a visit to his homeland is described in the book. Kazantzakis is a literary giant, Albert Camus was one of his friends and admirers, and the book is not for the casual reader.
To me this is the book I would choose to have if I was only allowed to own one book.

A unforgetable work of art!

I read this book many years ago, and I was spiritually changed by it. I now want to read it a second time to review the mystery of it all.
Nikos' search for more made his journey full because he was open to experience it ALL. He was a mystic individual.
My schedule hasn't allowed me the pleasure to read it the second time yet, but I am definitely looking forward to it. I'll probably want to read it a third time.
