Phillips's The Heart of an Executive: Lessons on Leadership from the Life of King David, this book offers a practical application of Buddhist teachings to managing business and life. A Buddhist monk and former diamond district executive, Roach says that the three Buddhist-inspired principles on which he built his success can be applied to other businesses and other circumstances. The principles stipulate that businesses should be profitable, that we should enjoy the money we earn, not working ourselves so hard earning it that we can't enjoy the nice home or relaxing trip it might provide, and that we should be able to claim, when all is said and done, that our years in business were meaningful. "To summarize," writes Roach, "the goal of business, and of ancient Tibetan wisdom... is to enrich ourselves." Roach's uncritical tendency to marry Buddhism and capitalism without so much as a raised eyebrow might give readers pause. (In the end, Roach redeems himself a little by suggesting that the Buddhist teachings of Limitlessness imply that everyone could have enough wealth.) The principles he propounds are appealing, indeed, but they tell us much more about current-day attitudes toward work and money than they do about "ancient Tibetan wisdom." Entrepreneurs seeking solid advice for worldly success may find this book helpful, but those interested in Tibetan Buddhism will likely consider it superficial. (Feb.)

After living in monasteries for many years, Roach was "encouraged" by his spiritual teacher to enter the world of business...."The Diamond Cutter" recounts his application of Buddhist principles to the marketplace, for the benefit of the entrepreneur who wants to "make a million and meditate too." Tips range from business self-help palaver to weird riffs on karma. Rents too high? "It might seem an oversimplification to say that refusing a bed to Aunt Martha when she came into town over the holidays could have anything to do to find a home," but it's no coincidence, either. The idea of nirvana is turned to uses Siddhartha never foresaw: "A real estate deal like Andin International's acquisition of a large nine-story building on the West Side of Manhattan is a good example of hidden potential, or what the Buddhists call 'emptiness.'" The meditation advice at the end of the book suggests what that Roach's readers really want is to attain enlightenment about being rich. It's never too hard to feel righteous about wealth, if one has it. To the degree that his readers have it, then Roach's book will succeed. -- From Beliefnet

Heartedly recommended

The Diamond Cutter book is very practical and a very special book. I read it a month ago and I can't say now that all of the principals do really work but my gut tells me that it is all true. One of the main ideas in the book is to take 2 or more weeks in solitude and to tackle the biggest challenges in your work and life, away from all the noise in the city and people - just to spend some time alone and listen to your mind. I usually do the most difficult things to feel the main idea, so I took 2 weeks away from work and went it in the mountains all by myself.

Believe it or not, I found answers to all of my challenges in work and in life. It was a very very scary thing and a really painful one; to see the bare naked truth of why I am the way I am and why I can't achieve what I like and desire. The truth was one and simple though. Nevertheless, it was really difficult to listen to my mind becoming louder and louder every day.

Ever since I'm back, I feel my life has been changed even though I am still the same. One small change in me that I can give as an example is that I don't write reviews on Amazon or anywhere else because it takes a lot of time and effort, and why would I bother to do it? Nothing I could gain - that's how I was thinking before. I just read what others have written and then I decide to purchase something here on Amazon or not. After reading The Diamond Cutter and Karmic Management, as you can see, I write reviews because there is something in me that believes now that what goes around comes around. Get the book and do something with it; reading is just reading - nice but take some action, then the change will come inevitably.

Amazing book!!

A friend recommended a book entitled "How Yoga Works" by Geshe Michael Roach. Once I started reading It, I could not put it down. I was so impressed and intrigued by his ideas that I told another friend about it, and she said she had read his book "The Diamond Cutter" and loved it.

As soon as she left my house I downloaded a sample of it onto my Kindle and started reading. Breathless with excitement I then downloaded the whole book and just kept reading all night. I couldn't put it down. My mind was literally blowing ... Almost like flashbulbs going off in my brain. I saw that my financial success can be a direct reflection of my spiritual life. Money by itself does not motivate me, however, I've been broke and I've been rich...and rich is a lot more fun. It also gives me time to meditate and create as well as contribute more to the world.

Get this book! Read it. Then read it again. And start implementing some of the practices. They feel great. Business and commerce is finally making soul sense.

A very important book

This is the best explanation and illustration of karma that I have ever read. Geshe Michael Roach explains, from his experience and understanding of Buddhist wisdom and the teachings of other great teachers, exactly how the effects of our thoughts, actions and words extend into the world and create the conditions we experience.
The real world examples in this book illustrate that the strict moral integrity that is encouraged by all the world's greatest spiritual teachers is important not in the interest of social order or because of obedience, but because it creates the very fabric of our perceived reality. This book is a treasure.

About the Author
Prof. Dr. H.C. Hasso Plattner is the chair of the "Enterprise Platform and Integration Concepts" research group at HPI, which focuses mainly on In-Memory Data Management for Enterprise Applications. He is author and co-author of over 50 scientific publications and has served conferences such as ACM SIGMOD as a keynote speaker. He is author of "In-Memory Data Management" and currently serves as a visiting professor at the Stanford University Institute of Design. Hasso Plattner is also a co-founder of SAP AG, where he served as CEO until 2003 and has since been chairman of the supervisory board. SAP AG today is the leading provider of enterprise software solutions. In his role as chief software advisor, he concentrates on defining the mid and long-term technology strategy and direction of SAP.

**Edit: One of the most annoying aspects of this book is that the majority of stories the writer tells are NOT her own stories!! So she's making bank by stealing other peoples' experiences. This is made even more annoying because she pairs these stories with her own judgmental remarks on other dancers'/customers' actions.**

I bought this book thinking that I could stomach the grammatical errors (mentioned by other reviewers), since the stories would hopefully be interesting/shocking/humorous enough to make up for the errors.

I was wrong. I'm easily entertained, but also educated, and this book failed to be entertaining or even merely educational about 'behind the scenes' stripping. I was not shocked by any of Diamond's stories (come on people, you probably know what goes on in Vegas by now...use your imaginations!) Diamond basically reiterates what you already think of Vegas strip clubs (for the right price, everything can happen), and doesn't even provide a unique perspective, or any insightful comments about her job. She seems VERY snooty, extremely cynical about men in general, undereducated (ironic, since one of her stories is about how a random customer complimented her on her intelligence), and unable to harness any forms of rhetoric to make her stories more interesting.

She seems to fail to realize that what goes on in Vegas ALSO goes on in clubs across America. Just because Las Vegas has a large collection of clubs in one place does NOT mean it's the only place where girls provide sexual favors in the back rooms.

If you want a good book that will provide you with entertaining anecdotes coupled with smart reflections/insights, buy the book "Callgirl: Confessions of an Ivy League Lady of Pleasure."

I'm also currently reading "Flesh for Fantasy" (women's studies, sex positive perspectives + customer perspectives + dancer perspectives).

And I just finished "Sex Work: Writings by Women in the Sex Industry," which was edited phenomenally and provides numerous perspectives from many different kinds of sex workers.

Similar to this book is "Jane Sexes It Up" which provides sex-positive, convincing, interesting arguments for marginalized, but normal, sexual practices (along with first-person accounts of such practices).

DO NOT BUY "A Stripper's Tail."

Not for the educated!

I have a big interest in women's studies and I dig how women can harness their sexual power to support themselves. I appreciate that Diamond opened up her life to share her tales which are interesting, but simply put, she is not a great story teller. Besides telling her 'tail', Diamond appears to give advice to the reader. This book is supposed to be her 'confessions', not tips for how to be a classy stripper or a better patron. Sorry Diamond, but I'm not looking to you to tell me how to behave! I really had to chuckle at how Diamond perceives herself as the morally superior stripper while she explains that all her co-strippers degrade themselves or wear cheap strip outfits. Sounds like rationalization to me. I've read many books in this genre and this was by far the worst. I felt like I was reading something written by a kid! I was horrified at the amount of grammatical and spelling errors in this book! Don't publishers have people to proof-read??? The reading level was so low that I gave the book to my Russian friend who doesn't have a good grasp of the english language. I'm glad she liked it because I feel stupid for having even made this purchase.

Not what I expected, too exagerated.

As someone that works in the sex industry - i am always looking for material that doesn't demean or ridicule girls in my field. Frankly, this book did just that. This dancer held herself up to be a pristine stripper with morals of gold - while her fellow dancers are portrayed to be a little more nasty and a little more seedy, and a little more willing to do anything for a dollar.

The insight into what really happens when men are turned loose on the Las Vegas scene sounds pretty made up to most of us other dancers who are out there every night. I guess it makes good reading material if you no nothing aobut stripping or strippers though.

Mistakes

I like Enderton's style, which is why I purchased his Computability text, but as it is a first edition, there are MANY mistakes in the text that I have seen so far and I am only on the second chapter. A lot of them are in examples and make the math more difficult to understand. Other than that, computability is an awesome subject, so there isn't much bad that can be said.

A Smorgasbord of Oddball Films!

101 CULT MOVIES YOU MUST SEE BEFORE YOU DIE is a celebration of the world's oddest, most tasteless, eccentric, weird, grossest, obscure, silly, scary, wicked, pretentious, ineptly made and/or controversial films of the past 90 years. There aren't many Academy Award winners in Steven Jay Schneider's book but film buffs will find it a long, strange (but enjoyable) trip.

Schneider's book is arranged chronologically. The first entry, surely one of THE most famous cult films ever, UN CHIEN ANDALOU, dates from 1928. The last movie covered, BRICK, was released in 2005. In between those two entries can be found most of the 'usual suspects' such as ROCKY HORROR, HAROLD AND MAUDE, SISTERS, BUCKAROO BANZAI, SUNSET BOULEVARD, FRANKENHOOKER, THIS IS SPINAL TAP, PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES, PINK FLAMINGOS, TOMMY, CRASH, EL TOPO, VANISHING POINT, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, etc. As with other books in this series, the joy is in being introduced to lesser-known titles such as SHOLAY, OUT OF THE PAST, GREY GARDENS, BANDE A PART and CITY OF LOST CHILDREN.

Schneider and his 16 contributors, a mix of college profs and film writers, offer up two-page summaries of each flick along with two photographs, many of which are in color. Generally the summaries are entertaining and insightful although occasionally you get the idea the writer is reaching for it and making 'much ado about nothing' (i.e. SHOWGIRLS!?!). Also, some entries give away the movie's ending, which may not please some readers.

I also wondered why certain films merited inclusion - like SHOWGIRLS and BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS - while other, more worthy movies - like FREAKS and DR. STRANGELOVE - didn't make the cut. But then, it's Schneider's book so what the heck!

In any case, film buffs should enjoy 101 CULT MOVIES. Whether you agree with all the titles chosen, Schneider & Co. dish up an interesting selection of boundary-stretching flicks. It's a hoot. Recommended.

They weren't blockbuster hits, they didn't receive a pile of awards, but they have a following of their own. "101 Cult Movies You Must See Before You Die" is a compilation of cult films that have come to prominence since the medium's inception. With films from around the world, these films have gained much infamy for their humor which pushed the limits of taste and decency during the release in the name of brutal honesty or for the sake of pushing the limit. "101 Cult Movies You Must See Before You Die" is a fine compendium for those who are searching for these films and want an understanding of their popularity.

Cult Movies for the Fan

Not entirely a good book, but definitely interesting. I got this book because I have an interest in the quirky films, ones that may not be blockbusters on the big screen, but have a definitely avid band of apostles who preach the wonders of said movies. This collection of two page essays for 101 films in that genre is good with one major (or minor, depending on your viewpoint) exception. The essays are written by several authors, most of whom are harmless. The one exception is the one identified as GC-Q. This particular author comes off as sounding like a pompous blowhard professor you had in college. A check of the index in the back identifies him as Garrett Chaffin-Quiray (even his name sounds pretentious...) and indeed, he is a professor in college. The worst part about his essays is he even makes movies that I have seen and thoroughly enjoy sound like something I wouldn't like. By the time I got halfway through the book I was able to identify his entries within the first sentence or two.

This is the absorbing and disturbing story of John Wayne Gacy, the suburban Chicago businessman sentenced to death in 1980 for the murders of 33 young boys, most of whose bodies were buried in the crawlspace under his home. Cahill, aided in his research by TV reporter Ewing, recreates Gacy's unhappy childhood with a violent father; his seemingly respectable life as a successful contractor and civic leader; and his five-year spree as a murderer who raped and tortured his victims. The book is told mainly from the vantage of the homosexual Gacy, a "creature of lies, internal contradictions, misrepresentations, and false idealism," who claims utter confusion over the crimes. Jurors dismissed an insanity plea, finding Gacy complex, antisocial and rational. Cahill includes graphic accounts of torture and sexual acts. John Gacy, sentenced to death for the Chicago-area slayings of 33 young men, has been the subject of prior bookssee, for example, Terry Sullivan's Killer Clown ( LJ 9/1/83). None, however, has explored the depths of Gacy's aberrant psychology, his childhood, and daily life as well as Buried Dreams. With Gacy's cooperation, albeit often contradictory and self-serving, and a four-year-long investigation, Cahill has managed the difficult task of unmasking, to the extent that it can be done, the motivation of a horrific killer. Best book on Gacy

I don't know how anyone my age or near my age who grew up in Chicago or the outlying suburbs could not remember the Gacy case. I had just turned 14 and was a freshman in high school when news first broke of his crimes. I remember my mother turning off the television for the 5:00 PM local news because of the lurid footage showing the remains being carried out of the house in bags. And I remember the Chicago Tribune running a full page showing individual pictures of all of the identified victims; the yearbook and school pictures of the boys looked like most of my classmates.

I first read this book back in 1987. I recently read it again, almost 20 years later, and I still believe it to be the most thorough, comprehensive book on Gacy. Cahill, an excellent journalist, has done an excellent job of presenting a complete picture of the man and his crimes. He managed to "get inside Gacy's head" (an unhealthy place) to give the reader a clear look of Gacy's personality, views on life, attitude towards his victims and reactions to his trial.

Along with covering the crimes, investigation, arrest and trial of Gacy, Cahill also delves into Gacy's childhood and early years, including his relationship with his abusive father. The book is detailed, and Cahill writes with the kind of insight that only comes from having a complete understanding of his subject. It's also clear that Cahill researched Gacy thoroughly, and he notes in his introduction that he culled his information from a number of sources.

As can be expected, this book is scary stuff, with two chapters in particular being extremely disturbing and frightening to read. Cahill doesn't merely describe, he casts the reader in the role of witness to one of Gacy's murders, showing Gacy's core of pure evil. That said, this is also the type of book that is tough to put down, and also the type that stays with you long after having finished it.

I too could not disagree more with the reviewer who accused Cahill of plagiarising "Killer Clown." They are two very different books. And while "Killer Clown" is a good book, written largely from a legal/trial and punishment perspective, the better of the two by far is "Buried Dreams." The best overall book on Gacy.

So it's hard for me to say if this isn't just grandstanding by the perpetrator which is so common amongst this disorder. Either way I was very turned off and walked away from it. Buried Dreams vrs Killer Clown

Reading these reviews that sound conflicting, I will try to sum up the difference between Killer Clown and Buried Dreams and it is simply this: Cahill is a writer, Sullivan is not. And although Sullivan had help, his book is still almost coldly factual, even as it flows well, but you will not get much out of it that can't be found on a hundred crime sites, besides his own frustration and dedication during the investigation. I'm not condemning this in any way, and if that is what you want as a reader, then Killer Clown will satisfy your cravings for facts and justice.

Cahill, on the other hand, has the same facts of course, but what he does with them is something you won't find anywhere else, something unique. He tells the tale almost from Gacy's point of view, piecing his sick-mindedness and subsequent murders together in a remarkably cohesive and insightful way. Right from the beginning. Some--probably most-- serial killers talk and 'fess up before their executions. Gacy did his confessing early, and then later went for the long shot that somehow he would place doubts in people's minds and save himself from death, by denying what he did. Definitely, he had no remorse. Except for a few slip-ups here and there, he gave no further information on his motivation or how his victims died. Using the facts he had, Cahill filled in these blanks, and answered the tough questions that Sullivan couldn't or wouldn't.

Buried Dreams is not just facts. It is not a text-book blanket profiling of collective criminal minds. It is not the investigation, trial and conviction from the detectives and lawyers points of views. It is as close as Cahill could get to showing us Gacy, personally, from the inside and I doubt it's far off the mark. It's consistent with Gacy's personality right up to his lethal injection. Yes, chilling. As it should be.
