Physical asset management is the management of fixed or non-current assets such as equipment and plant. Physical Asset Management presents a systematic approach to the management of these assets from concept to disposal.

Historically, asset management has not been seen as a specific professional activity, but now perceptions are changing. Many organizations are introducing senior positions in asset management, and universities are introducing courses in asset management at graduate and advanced undergraduate level. The broad reach of this book means that it will be applicable to professionals and future professionals across a wide variety of industries, ranging from manufacturing and distribution, to local government.

The general principles of physical asset management are discussed in a manner which makes them accessible to a wide audience, and covers all stages of the asset management process, including: initial business appraisal; identification of fixed asset needs; financial evaluation; logistic support analysis; life cycle costing; maintenance strategy; outsourcing; cost-benefit analysis; disposal; and renewal.

About the Author

Nicholas Hastings is currently adjunct professor at the Queensland University of Technology's Centre of Integrated Engineering Asset Management. He is also a consultant in engineering asset management for Albany Interactive Pty. Ltd.

Dr Hastings began his career with the British Army's Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, before joining the Department of Engineering Production at the University of Birmingham, where he completed his PhD in operations research. He then became Professor of Operations Research at Monash University (Melbourne) prior to joining the Queensland University of Technology. In 2006 he was awarded the Medal of the Maintenance Engineering Society of Australia / Asset Management Council of Australia for his contribution to reliability and engineering asset management.

too shallow

I am a physical asset management specialist for our mining company and brought this book on my kindle to see how good Hasting's interpretation of PAS 55:2008 is. I was disappointed with the lack of anything to add from PAS 55 with the policies, strategies and objectives.

If you do not own PAS 55 and know very little of physical asset management (PAM), then by all means, buy this book (its cheaper than PAS 55) and become educated (in a little bit of almost everything in PAM). I warn however that this book is too simple most of the time in the theory/principles that it presents. And the structure/framework in which physical asset management is presented is not very logical. I have difficulty forming a "big picture" of PAM in my head from this book, and find referencing subjects cumbersome (i don't know where to look).

PAM as a subject is perhaps too broad to encapsulate in any sufficient depth in a single book, but then I expect the principles and structure/framework to be very good. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the book did not quite get it right.

Fake Dennis Is Not Very Interesting

Well, here's something That I could do without and be quite happy.
The author isn't the son of Hank Ketchum who based the cartoon on a five year old Dennis Ketchum and the entire idea for this book seems to be a work of fantasy. The illusion presented here is that this author Elly Vines ( in some other world distant from this one) believes he is the 'real Dennis and Hank observed him and based all of his comic ideas upon his actions.

This was a spoiled kid and there is an issue with an ego larger than Montana if the author thinks that any fan of the cartoon would be able to extract any value from this book.

'Not For Free' will not substitute for a top-level MBA; however, it does update thinking on important marketing dimensions utilizing recent examples. Author Berman contends that nearly every industry is susceptible to widely available low-cost disruptions originating from low-cost communications, data-processing, rapid innovation, and great increased consumer expectations. For example, record companies lost 40% of their revenues since 2000, newspapers 85% of their classified revenues from print editions between 2005-2009, and long-distance telecommunications revenues dropped 80% in the first decade of the new millennium. Further, markets have become increasingly fragmented recently, thanks to increased choices (eg. # of channels), new options - via new technology (eg. Netflix offering both mail and Internet delivery of movies, kiosks are another new option).

Berman then continues by proposing how companies can grow revenue organically in the near term using segmentation, pricing, payer, and packaging innovation. Segmentation groupings have become more useful through technology - rewards cards that accurately track customer actions, and more accurate analyses/predictions via software (eg. Amazon, Netflix). Pricing innovations include new rental offerings (eg. prom dresses), pay-for-performance (some cancer drugs in Britain), selling by parts (eg. individual songs from a disc), and bundling (car options, cable options). Unlimited mobile phone data plans have run into problems via video streaming (projected to be 56% of traffic by 2013). Verizon's not charging for calls to/from fellow Verizon customers encourages existing customers to recruit for the company.

'Spotify' is an English music service funded by 20 second ads for each 30 minutes of music. Hulu intends to offer 'hour-long' programs with only 4 minutes of advertising. Finally, readers should beware to putting excess emphasis on Berman's thoughts, good as they are, if that means missing opportunities through slower than possible innovation. Eg. the first Kindles generated far more revenue/unit than those today.

Eminently Practical

Berman's book is something of a rarity these days--a business book that focuses on near term and actually possible experiments and innovations. You don't have to be the CEO or the Chairman of the Board with carte-blanche (and magical powers) to completely change your business, culture and financial situation to be able to take Berman's advice.

The book looks at why it's important to innovate the ways you earn revenue and how you can try things. Each of the main chapters has a helpful typology of different revenue strategies. The body of the chapter itself is essentially an explanation of the strategies with examples of companies that have tried them and the successes and difficulties they encountered.

This is a short book as well, eminently readable in a couple of sessions or short hop flights. But its real value will be in going back to it to help drive ideas and experiments for how to engage with a very quickly changing market so you can earn the revenue necessary to fund further innovation.

He began his teaching career at the University of Kentucky and for the past forty years has been teaching at Yale University, where he is currently the Henry L. and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Music. At Yale, Wright's courses include his perennially popular introductory course, Listening to Music (also part of the offerings of Open Yale Courses); his large lecture course Exploring the Nature of Genius; and most recently his Coursera course Introduction to Classical Music. He is the author of numerous scholarly books and articles on composers ranging from Leoninus to Bach. Wright has also been the recipient of many awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Einstein and Kinkeldey Awards of the American Musicological Society, and the Dent Medal of the International Musicological Society. In 2004, he was awarded the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Chicago. And in 2010 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, joining fellow inductee, banjo player Steve Martin. In addition to LISTENING TO MUSIC and LISTENING TO WESTERN MUSIC, EIGHTH EDITION, Wright has also published THE ESSENTIAL LISTENING TO MUSIC, SECOND EDITION; LISTENING TO MUSIC, CHINESE EDITION (Schirmer Cengage Learning/Three Union Press, 2012), translated and simplified by Profs. Li Xiujung (China Conservatory, Beijing) and Yu Zhigang (Central Conservatory, Beijing), both of whom worked with Wright at Yale; and MUSIC IN WESTERN CIVILIZATION, MEDIA UPDATE (Schirmer Cengage Learning, 2010), with coauthor Bryan Simms. He is currently at work on a volume titled MOZART'S BRAIN: EXPLORING THE NATURE OF GENIUS.

"THE BOOK" on the CIA and the war in Laos!

I was a CIA officer who fought in Laos from '70 to '72. This is, without a doubt, the best book on the war in Laos. It is not an "adventure" novel or a book of "I was there" like some other books on the war. It is a well researched and in depth account of the war and the CIA involvement. Ken Conboy went to great lengths to research and interview participants in the war, from all sides, and his book is a very detailed and accurate account of the US/CIA effort to prevent Laos from falling to the Communists. This is not, repeat not, a book for casual reading! Conboy has gone to into great detail about the war and the people who fought it; it is, without a doubt, the best account of a war that, to most, is still a "secret war." There are other books about the war that are easier reads but none that is are more accurate or have more depth. This is a great reference book. If you are a serious student of the CIA effort in Southeast Asia during the 60's to the late 70's then this is the book for you.

So I read with keen interest Kenneth Conboys book, and it is most informative. I read Shadow War recently after finishing several other somewhat related titles ie. "Tragedy in Paradise" by Charles Weldon MD "A Code to Keep" by Ernest Bruce and "The Sorrow of War" by Bao Ninh "Hell in a Very small place" Mr Kenneth Conboy series of books and these others should be required reading for all American policy makers before they deploy Americans, Hmongs, Filipinos, or Thais to project American policy abroad. Love Big Head Bio Books----and Reagan

My kids love the Big head Bio Books. My 6 year old loves to read anything but my 8 year especially loves History. These books are great. Though the book doesn't go into dramatic detail it does give a fast sweeping historical look of Reagan. Fun book.

Facts which are irrelevant to the great contribution of Ronald Reagan

This book does not even begin to express the great contribution made to the conservative cause by one of the greatest presidents in American History. It is as if the author knows nothing about the contribution of Ronald Reagan and is purposefully avoiding the major issues. Although the book is for kids, at least some background regarding the effort to reduce the size and scope of government would be appropriate. The publisher should have found an author who appreciates the scope of the Reagan presidency.
