... frameworks and especially those built on top of the excellent and now in its rebirth PHP
By A. Zubarev
You will not come across many robust HMVC web frameworks and especially those built on top of the excellent and now in its rebirth PHP. To not to reiterate over the things how HMVC is much more advanced than the vanilla MVC you can read a nice blog post dedicated to this topic. If you do not bother visiting it I will not be lazy to state it is the familiar MVC, but logically structured. FuelPHP is exactly such an HMVC implementation. So if you ask why HMVC, well, here I offer two choices, ether get a free chapter of the FuelPHP Application Development Blueprints book, or listen to me, well read rather: it allows what not so-web developers call “design by contract” (DbC). But this is what I say after I read this book.

So the book, it belongs to the “blueprints” Packt’s category of publications which means it guides you through building an implementation end-to-end and “starting” as its difficulty level. Sébastien has delivered both. Even more, you’ll actually build several apps, different in difficulty levels.

I suggest a prospective reader be familiar with the concepts of the web development and web application principals, better yet has already done some basic, static web pages, and having some PHP knowledge is not going to harm.

The book starts with mere basics, but by page 200 or so you are in very advanced areas as coding your own APIs. In short, all the major development aspects as project code maintenance and organization, unit testing are covered. Even creating your own REST service received a dedicated chapter which I liked the most. Even though the book does not boast with many graphics or any web page examples you are building the reader must be enjoying the fruits of her or his work regardless, after all Web apps are so graphical on any computer.

You will not need much to go through this book and practice FuelPHP. It is freely available to download. The framework incorporates powerful tools as oil (utility and console) which facilitates creation of the building blocks of a web application. It is really powerful and if I am not mistaken saves developer a ton of time (think more money).

The last chapter of the book is covering Novius OS. Novius is a Content Management web based solution. With Novius OS it is easy to start or when you do not have much time it might be the answer, deliver the complex content later! Why CMS? Because it is based on FuelPHP, and CMS’ are quite hard to make right. You can go and see a demo (highly recommend) and/or real businesses using it. It is just inspirational. You shall be convinced HMVC rocks, if not give it a pass and leave me a comment please why so. I found it attractive, yet, I discovered there is a web-hosting proposition that includes Novius. It is not free, but hey there is no free lunches, well, at the price advertised I deem it is quite economical for such an implementation.

To sum-up, in my view this is a 4.5 out of 5 work as a book, but PHP, HMVC and FuelPHP all sassy!

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with anything FuelPHP and I intended this post does not serve as a promotion of any kind.

I found this book to be clear and concise, and I was pleased that it covered a wide range of topics with only 5 chapters. I was especially glad to see one of those chapters devoted to implementing a REST API complete with a section on unit testing. I have some experience with PHP frameworks (specifically Kohana) and this book got me up to speed with FuelPHP in no time.

Great Book!
By Frank A. Rocco
I have worked with other PHP frameworks like Laravel, Yii and wanted to learn FuelPHP.
I chose this book because it offered real world examples which helped me grasp FuelPHP concepts.
It was very helpful in showing me how to develop an administration backend using FuelPHP.
I highly recommend this book.

Our group
By twinsmom
I have two different sets of friends that I am studying this with, the first group, long established Christians, find that the questions posed may give rise to some deep thought, and are enjoying this book. My second group, who are new to Bible Study also like the book, and give either "I don't know" or very simple superficial answers, which leads to some very teachable moments, which whilst straying away from the text, do lead to a greater understanding of the Good News of Christ. Recommended!

Excellent Personal Study
By B. Holland
I just completed this study on my own using the Kindle version. I found it excellent--thorough, thought provoking, challenging and uplifting. Each lesson begins with an opening question followed by questions on the portion of text for that lesson and ends with prayer. Sometimes the author adds notes of explanation on difficult portions of scripture or passages that scholars disagree on. I liked this format and the content was excellent.

Not good for group study
By Boydsnest
Not very good for group study, in my opinion. I used this for a class, and all of us found the discussion questions vague or irrelevant. I have found that the other N.T. Wright books are thought provoking and excellent, but this one not so much. We shifted to another book half way through the study...

The European Council and European Governance: The Commanding Heights of the EU (Routledge Studies on Government and the European Union)F

In recent years, the failure of the constitutional process, the difficult ratification and implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, as well as the several crises affecting Europe have revitalized the debate on the nature of the European polity and the balance of powers in Brussels. This book explains the redistribution of power in the post-Lisbon EU with a focus on the European Council.

Reform of institutions and the creation of new political functions at the top of the European Union have raised fresh questions about leadership and accountability. This book argues that the European Union exhibits a political order with hierarchies, mechanisms of domination and legitimating narratives. As such, it can be understood by analysing what happens at its summit. Taking the European Council as the nexus of European political governance, contributors consider council and rotating presidencies' co-operation, rivalry and opposition. The book combines approaches through events, processes and political structures, issues and the biographical trajectories of actors and explores how the founding compromise of European integration between sovereignty and supranationality is affected by the evolving nature of this new European political model which aims to combine cooperation and integration.

The European Council and European Governance will be of strong interest to students and scholars of European studies, political science, political sociology, public policy and international relations.

The Next Christendom: The Coming of Global Christianity, by Philip Jenkins

The first edition of The Next Christendom has been hailed as a landmark in our understanding of modern Christianity. In this new and substantially expanded second edition, Jenkins continues to illuminate the remarkable expanion of Christianity in the global South--in Africa, Asia, and Latin America--as well as the clash betwen Islam and Christianity since September 11. Among the major topics covered are the growing schism between Northern and Southern churches over issues of gender and sexuality, immigrant and ethnic churches in North America, and a special section on the split within the Anglican Communion. The first in a three-book trilogy on the changes besetting modern Christianity, this award-winning book will be welcomed by all of those who have come to recognize Philip Jenkins as one of our leading commentators on religion and world affairs.

From Library Journal
Jenkins (history and religious studies, Pennsylvania State Univ.) believes that we are on the verge of a transformational religious shift. As he explains it, Christianity, the religion of the West, is rapidly expanding south into Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and he predicts that by the year 2050, only about one-fifth of the world's three billion Christians will be non-Hispanic Caucasian. By numbers alone, they will be able to overwhelm the present political secular nation- and city-states and replace them with theocracies, similar to the Islamic Arab nations. He ends with a warning: with the rise of Islam and Christianity in the heavily populated areas of the Southern Hemisphere, we could see a wave of religious struggles, a new age of Christian crusades and Muslim jihads. These dire prognostications could be seen as just another rant from a xenophobic pseudo-prophet; however, the author is a noted historian, and his statements are well formed, well supported by empirical evidence, and compellingly argued. The only criticism is the brevity of the book. One hopes that The Next Christendom is only an introduction to a deeper analysis of a fascinating topic. Recommended for all libraries. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Fear of Islam is peaking, fueled by reports that the religion is burgeoning in numbers as well as militancy. Jenkins grants that Islam is indeed booming but marshals the evidence that today's largest religion, Christianity, will grow exponentially, too, and will remain the faith of the largest proportion of humanity. But the Christianity of 2050 will be very different from that molded by the 1,300 years during which Christianity was the faith of a rapidly developing Europe. The new Christianity will be liturgically anarchistic compared with the staid services of white, upper-middle-class people today. It will be overwhelmingly the faith of poor nonwhites living south of Europe, the U.S., and present-day Russia, and it won't reflect the values of the wealthy global north. It will revive Christianity's root emphases on healing and prophecy because its adherents will resemble the poor and oppressed who first embraced the redemption, the healing, and the blessing that Jesus promised. As he makes his case, Jenkins dispels some fashionable myths about historic Christianity; about historic Christian-Islamic relations; and about the nature of presumably pacific Hinduism when it is politicized. He also speculates trenchantly on how the problems of the Islamic and Christian global south will affect the global north, requiring genuine charity of the rich and genuine discernment of their leaders. A book everyone concerned about humanity's immediate future ought to read. Ray Olson

This is a landmark book. Baptist Times [an] important book... sober, scholarly analysis... Jenkins has such an acute eye for what is happening that the senario he depicts must be taken very seriously indeed. John Pridmore, The Tablet

a world far different from the one we thought we knew
By David A. Baer
In a memorable passage from the movie APOLLO THIRTEEN, a military man in the tense Houston control room shares with a political figure his premonition that the tragedy unfolding before them will be *the* catastrophic moment for the space program. Mission control flight chief Gene Kranz overhears their conversation and addresses it: 'With all due respect, gentleman, I believe this will be our finest hour.' The scene could stand in for the hand-wringing that often accompanies the apparent demise of the Western church when it comes to prognosticating on its fate over against the perceived adversaries of secularism and post-modernism. Philip Jenkins reminds us that, when viewed through a wide-screen lens, the immediacy of threat often yields to a broad panorama of opportunity.

Over against the fear of resurgent religion that shows its face among our cultural elites, Philip Jenkins sketches the rise of 'global Christianity' in predominantly positive terms. The Penn State University scholar of religion has noticed long before most of us that the face of Christendom is already brown, southern, and confident. He helps us to work through the implications of this even as he persuades us that the hegemony of Euro-American Christianity is a thing of the past and that-unless we pay attention-we who are part of it are likely to be, as the old song says, the last to know.

In the first of ten compact chapters ('The Christian Revolution', pp. 1-14), Jenkins starts out with a bang. Professional analysts of global trends have missed out on perhaps the biggest one, a fact that the title of Jenkins' opening chapter provocatively suggests. Religious revolutions are not, as Western intellectuals too often suppose, mere matters of the heart. They bring with them profoundly this-worldly repercussions like crusades, wars, and what Samuel Huntington has famously termed 'the clash of civilizations'. They can also renew societies. Jenkins informs us that a 'Christian revolution' is already underway in the developing world, one that our political leaders ignore to the peril of all of us.

The historian who can write well-researched prose for a popular readership and manage to turn large assumptions on their head is a valuable person indeed. Jenkins accomplishes just this in his second chapter ('Disciples of All Nations' pp. 15-38). He helps us to see that Christianity is not best understood as a western religion. Its African, Middle Eastern, and Asian successes were large and entrenched centuries before it came to be perceived by some as the faith of white men. Even popular myth of Christian crusades dispossessing Muslims of their ancestral turf is misleading in the extreme when viewed against the historical facts of Islamic expansionism and enduring Christian communities among those peoples whom we today identify reflexively as Muslim. Europe entered late into this story. Jenkins wonders, with one of his sources, whether the universal Christianity he describes is not best seen as the 'renewal of a non-western religion', a suggestion that gains credence when one ponders how alien Western skepticism immediately appears when placed beside the biblical documents, on the one hand, and ancient or emerging Christian movements from Africa or Asia, on the other.

If Western mythology about the missionary enterprise(s) is to be believed, it is the power of kings, companies, and missionaries that enforced a European Christian faith upon the reluctant peoples of the Two-Thirds World. Jenkins does not believe it, however, arguing that even when these institutions are given their due, Christianity has become an indigenous brushfire in many of the regions under review ('Missionaries and Prophets', pp. 39-53). Indeed, Christian faith of one variety or another-and sometimes several at once-appears to have thrived since the retreat of colonial powers. A guilty missionary conscience would appear to be a neurosis suffered largely in the West.

When the demise of European empires brought forward the moment for non-Western churches to stand alone, they had little trouble doing so (Ch. 3, 'Standing Alone, pp. 55-78). Indeed, the European retraction coincided with several significant Christian advances that affected both the European-founded churches and newer autochthonous movements. Academic interest in the latter often overshadows the at least as remarkable health of Roman Catholic, Anglican, and other traditional churches. Jenkins observes parallels between the developments he surveys in the 'South' and those that characterized a similar time of awakening, urbanization, and religious effervescence in the industrializing North.

Jenkins' fifth chapter ('The Rise of the New Christianity', pp. 79-105) produces some plausible and startling speculations based upon demographic trends extrapolated out from evidence that is available today. Population growth and contraction look poised to reduce European populations radically while a boom in many southern states continues apace. When turning to religious indicators, all of them suggest that the surge in southern Christianity has barely begun. The picture becomes even more interestingly when population mobility is factored into the equation. Immigration to Europe may well establish a renewed Christian presence on that continent. America looks set to become even more of a Christian nation than it is today, again due to immigration.

In 'Coming to Terms' (ch. 6, pp. 107-139), Jenkins surveys how churches in the Two-Thirds world `inculturate' the gospel in their cultural contexts. Though the results are sometimes alarming to Western Christians, Jenkins' view is rather more sanguine, claiming that most of these adaptations are well within the parameters of recognizably Christian faith. As demographic changes favor the Southern churches, their patterns of life and worship-often viscerally supernatural in their orientation-are bound to become the dominant ones in a new Christendom.

Jenkins' seventh chapter prognosticates about the varying models of church and state that can be expected as important southern countries become demographically Christian ('God and the World', pp. 141-162). The predictions are not all reassuring to heirs of a strong tradition of separation between the two. Even more unsettling is the possibility of a secular north looking down its nose at-and perhaps coming to blows with-a fervently religious south. In the limited but important realm of ecclesiastical politics, events since the 2002 publication of the book make Jenkins look prescient, a virtue he takes scholarly care to disown. Developments in the American political landscape make one wonder whether this country might become divided in two along the same lines rather than ease into alignment with its secular northern compeers. The sight of sophisticated American Episcopalians separating from local oversight, calling themselves 'Anglicans', and placing themselves under the pastoral care of African bishops may be the robin that calls this particular Spring.

Jenkins' book is highly quotable and for this reason often brandished as a triumphalist Christian tract. That this is a misreading of his work is nowhere more obvious than in his prediction of continued and severe Muslim-Christian conflict ('The Next Crusade', 163-190) in those regions where both Islam and Christianity are experiencing a resurgence. Jenkins acknowledges that a world in which powerful adversaries take religion far more seriously than does today's sophisticated North should keep strategic planners up at night. Simple parents imagining the world in which their children will come of age might also join this insomniac corps.

What effect will southern Christianity have on northern churches and culture? This is Jenkins' question in 'Coming Home' (pp. 191-209). Events since the late 90s have given the author some hard facts to work with. The southern churches are almost all theologically and culturally more conservative than their northern partners. But are they so distinct so as to be incapable of re-evangelizing secularized Europe and the USA? Maybe not. Stay tuned.

Jenkins takes up his final opportunity ('Seeing Christianity Again for the First Time', pp. 211-220) in the first person plural, for the first time plainly identifying himself as a Christian social scientist who cares deeply about the 'we' of Christian faith. Dispassionate analysis is exchanged for what becomes almost an indictment of northern Christian myopia. From the angle which Jenkins permits us to view the world of, say 2050 A.D., the persecution and poverty of which so much are made in the New Testament literature is also the context of the majority of today's Christians (not to mention those who await their moment a half-century hence).

As a Christian reviewer whose work takes him to those corners of the world (or are they its centers?) that Jenkins surveys, I find in Jenkins' work the ring of truth. Many Christians exult in the statistics of Christian resurgence that crowd the pages of this book and allow its title to sound something other than arrogant. In my judgment, they have misread Jenkins. There is more challenge here than pom-poms for waving by those of us whose historical circumstances make it comfortable to cheer on impoverished brethren who remain-by and large-at a safe distance.

This is not an optimistic book, though it is profoundly hopeful. It is perhaps among the two or three that Western Christians ought first to read in this decade, as we hope for a revision of this fine work in the next. We live on the cusp of extraordinary Christian advance, indeed it is already upon us. In the light of these demographic trends, however, the ancient voice of Tertullian sounds ever more pertinent to the world that is already taking shape, a world that Jenkins urges us to see from an entirely fresh angle. 'The blood of the martyrs', that church father still soberly reminds us, 'is the seed of the church.'

A (perhaps unintended) endictment of "northern" Christianity
By Kerry Walters
Jenkins's *The New Christendom* is an incredibly thought-provoking estimate of the new faces Christianity will wear in the next half century. Given that population and religious enthusiasm is waning in the northern hemisphere, and just the opposite is going on in the southern one, Jenkins predicts that Christianity's center of gravity will migrate to Africa and Central and South America in the immediate decades ahead. This will result in the emergence of new symbols, new styles of worship, new metaphors, and new ethical sensibilities, all of which mean that Christianity will no longer be dominated by an Eurocentric history and ethos.
Because southern Christianity will become increasingly pentecostal, evengelical, and politically and morally conservative, northern sensibilities, which already tend to take the Christian message with an urbane grain of salt, are likely to dismiss Christianity even more. It will be dismissed as "jungle religion," (p. 169) contrary to both enlightened and postmodern ways of viewing the world. Thus the north will find pseudo-legitimation for its steady move toward secularism in religious revival of the south.
In defending this thesis, Jenkins indirectly raises serious concerns about the spiritual health of North American and European Christianity. If his predictions are in any way true--and they certainly have the ring of plausibility--then it follows that mainstream institutional Christianity, Catholic and Protestant alike, needs to reflect seriously on both its style and convictions. If it's become so indifferent to its own message that it finds enthusiastic support of that message distasteful, things have reached a sorry state. In predicting the rise of a "southern" Christendom, then, Jenkins has done more than suggested a demographic migration. He's also implicitly invited "northern" Christians to take a hard look at themselves and their beliefs, and ultimately to cut bait or fish.
Jenkins is a good writer with a fluid and lively style. The first four chapters, in which he makes the statistical and demographic case for his predictions, are nonetheless rather slow-going. Readers with no head (or patience) for statistical tables might wish to read the first two chapters and then skip immediately to Chapter 5.

Death of Christianity? Think again.
By A Customer
If you are interested in the future of religion in general and Christianity in particular, the one must read book this year has been written by Phil Jenkins.
A respected professor at Penn State University who has been known for "going against the flow," Jenkins argues that the rapid growth of primitive/Pentecostal Christianity around the world (both within and alongside existing traditions) will literally reshape the world, with possible religious conflict affecting everything from historic European denominations (already happening in Anglicanism) to geopolitics.
In a post-modern world, religion returns to center stage, and Jenkins has already turned on the spotlight. This is a must-read for all futurists--including the armchair variety such as myself. After reading Jenkins' seemingly airtight (even understated) analysis, it is difficult to give credence to any author suggesting the passing of Christianity. For every empty cathedral in Europe, there is a burgeoning congregation in Africa or Latin America. In fact, the western, modern version of Christianity may be be all but swept away in the next 50-100 years, but the primitive variety is reemerging at an incredible pace.
Not many works from Oxford University Press read like thrillers. This is an exception.

The Kaiser's Battlefleet: German Capital Ships 1871-1918, by Aidan Dodson

The battleships of the Third Reich have been written about exhaustively, but there is little in English devoted to their Second Reich predecessors. This new book fills an important gap in the literature of the period by covering these German capital ships in detail and studying the full span of battleship development during this period. The book is arranged as a chronological narrative, with technical details, construction schedules, and ultimate fates tabulated throughout, thus avoiding the sometimes disjointed structure that can result from a class-by-class approach. Heavily illustrated with line drawings and photographs, many from German sources, the book offers readers a fresh visual look at these ships. A key objective of the book is to make available a full synthesis of the published fruits of archival research by German writers found in the pre-World War II books of Koop & Schmolke, Großmer’s on the construction program of the dreadnaught era, Forstmeier & Breyer on World War I projects, and Schenk & Nottelmann’s papers in Warship International. As well as providing data not available in English-language books, these sources correct significant errors in standard English sources.

A Keeper BUT not Definitive
By jack greene
Seaforth Publishing has done it yet again. They have produced a lovely book filled with great photographs as well as some excellent information. The last 1/3rd of the book is devoted to ship plans and stats.
The much-published Aidan Dodson of the University of Bristol writes it. Dodson is best known for his work and his career in ancient Egyptian studies. Writing this book on the German battleships and large cruisers from 1871 to 1918 reminded me of the late professor Andrea Curami who worked in Italian military history, but his professional back ground was in bridge engineering. They were and are a credit to both.
The study does work in German secondary source material but is wedded in mostly in English language studies and the professor has clearly examined many sources. He does get the German desire for a high rate of fire for their warships (p45). He notes in the role of the weather patterns (p75) in the North Sea and Baltic which more often than not dictated short-range battle conditions.
One of the real strengths of this volume is you can pretty much know what squadrons ships belonged to at just about any point covered in this book, what their reconstructions turned them into, and often accompanied with a photograph showing the changes. So one will know the Deutschland (1 – 1875) seems to be an ill-fated warship. One tidbit is that before World War One the Moltke was almost dispatched to von Spee in the Far East. Additionally there is much on German built warships bought by other nations.
So what does the book not cover? 1) range of guns is neither complete nor perfectly accurate. Many German guns had their ranges extended in 1915 that Dodson misses (see Scheer’s book & p128 here). 2) You have German fleet organization but little on tactics and NOTHING on how the Germans used their battle squadrons as independent tactical units. (p105 & pp172-175). 3) Modern fire control is mentioned but there is really nothing about it here. 4) The advanced German use of water pumping, key when damaged for the survival of a warship is mentioned only in passing.
The professor gets a passing grade, but no “A”. It is a keeper, but is NOT definitive.

Disclaimer: I have a wargame coming out on JUTLAND at the end of the year that I have been researching for 4+ years. An essay on it just appeared in M.I.T.s ZONES OF CONTROL.

Great coverage in a relatively small work
By Michael Dunham
Great coverage in a relatively small work! Although much may be familiar to an in depth enthusiast, there was still information that is new to me in English, rather than laboring through texts "auf deutsch". Photographic coverage is quite good, and many pix that are new to me, despite my 48 year interest in the High Seas Fleet. I highly recommend this work, and the excellent bibliography provides for those who wish to pursue more detailed information on particular classes or individual ships.

Thoroughly Enjoyable Reference
By Amazon Customer
Just what I wanted... lots of details. This is a good companion for Robert K. Massie's book "Dreadnought"

The history included technological pollination events that I was unaware of (such as a USN Civil War Monitor getting into a "shoot off" with a German vessel). The ship lists are replete with major details. The section of line drawings (profile) was unexpected and welcome. Numerous deck plans and cut-away drawings and period photos go a long way to making these vessels "real" again.

Revolt in Syria: Eye-Witness to the Uprising, by Stephen Starr

In January 2011 President Bashar al-Assad told the Wall Street Journal that Syria was stable and immune from revolt. In the months that followed, and as regimes fell in Egypt and Tunisia, thousands of Syrians took to the streets calling for freedom, with many dying at the hands of the regime. Stephen Starr delves deep into the lives of Syrians whose destiny has been shaped by the state for almost fifty years. In conversations with people from all strata of Syrian society, Starr draws together and makes sense of perspectives illustrating why Syria, with its numerous sects and religions, was so prone to violence and civil strife. Through his unique access to a country largely cut off from the international media during the unrest, Starr delivers compelling first hand testimony from both those who suffered and benefited most at the hands of the regime. Revolt in Syria details why many Syrians wanted Assad s government to stay as the threat of civil war loomed large, the long-standing gap between the state apparatus and its people and why the country s youth stood up decisively for freedom. Starr also sets out the positions adhered to by the country s minorities and explains why many Syrians believe that enforced regime change might precipitate a region-wide conflict. This revised and updated edition contains a chapter bringing it up to the end of 2013, and examines the experiences of those who have fled the fighting to Turkey and elsewhere.

Review

"[Starr's] material is vivid, thought-provoking and sometimes shocking...As eyewitness testimony, it has great value, not least because it challenges some of the simple certainties that have characterised coverage of the Syrian uprising. Mr. Starr captures the pain of a deeply torn society in the throes of a bitter struggle, one that has estranged brother from brother, friend from friend."--The Economist

"Starr's book is the only account that gives previously unheard voices a chance to be heard...his familiarity with the sectarian and political milieu in Syria is better than anyone I know. He has spent five years in the country, marrying into Syrian society if there is one Irishman that the Syrians would describe as muta rrib, Arabicised , it is him...Through a series of vignettes and anecdotes, Starr provides us with a plethora of voices from minorities: Sunnis, Shias, Kurds, Palestinians, pro-regime and anti regime Syrians...The book is a witness to a dilapidated regime [and] Starr captures it all brilliantly."--New Statesman

"Unlike most western reporters who have written from Syria, Stephen Starr brings to bear a great deal of personal experience of the country, having lived and worked in Damascus for four years, including a spell with the state media. He's the sort of man who notices the price of milk going up and the increased presence of security forces on the streets as the noose tightens. With a wide network of friends and contacts, he conveys the warp and weft of daily life with an admirably nuanced understanding of the place."--The Spectator

"Stephen Starr has taken on the mammoth task of elucidating this confusing country. After four years in Syria, he has some insight. . . The general conclusion is that no one in Syria knows what is going on, either inside or outside their own neighbourhoods. It is therefore a strange kind of enlightenment that this book offers, but probably an accurate on."--Times Literary Supplmenet

"The book is an important contribution to the hugely stifled subject of Syria."--Huffington Post

"In the style of Kapuscinski, Revolt in Syria offers the reader a lively text, filled with interesting anecdotes and conversations detailing the first year of the conflict. Aided by five years as a freelance journalist based in Damascus, Starr draws on a broad array of interviewees when offering examples of the decay afflicting many of the country's institutions." -- José Ciro Martínez, New Middle Eastern Studies

"Stephen Starr has written an extraordinary account of the uprising against the regime of Bashar al-Assad...[An] impressive and insightful eye-witness account."--Irish Times

"No-one interested in the contemporary Arab world can afford to miss this book." -- The Muslim World Book Review

Review

Powerful and important. This searching inquiry is painful reading, but urgent for those who hope to understand what lies behind the shocking events in Syria, what the prospects might be, and what outsiders can -- and cannot -- do to mitigate the immense suffering as a country so rich in history and promise careens towards disaster.

Not a bad start for a study of Syria.
By old new lefty
Steven Starr gives lots of up to date information on the conditions in Syria both before and after the Arab Spring hit. You'll certainly get the feeling that any outside power wanting to intervene there would be downright foolish under current conditions. And you get some idea of the nature of the Baath Party and Assad's base of power. Ultimately I was looking for more than what I found in this book, as I didn't get any information on the in depth, internal structure of the Assad government.

Frustrating but unique
By James R. Maclean
(The author of this review has never visited Syria. What follows is a book review, not a discussion of events in Syria.)

A survey of books published on the Syrian Revolt of 2011 is disappointing: nearly all of them (this excepted) are summaries of widely available news reports on Syria (1). This one and Mr. Wieland's (see footnote) consist mainly of the authors' personal observations in Syria. Starr's account is almost a diary, while Wieland's is organized like an area handbook.

Starr's book urgently needs an editor. The writing is at times difficult to follow, as if he had stitched together many rough drafts, without being able to remember what he had explained to readers. Crucial backstory is often missing or misrepresented (2). Whenever summarizing relevant historical events, Starr crumples the chronology:

[QUOTE]

When the Baath (Renaissance) Party took control of Syria in 1963, followed by an internal military coup led by Hafez al-Assad in 1970, Arab nationist sentiment was elevated to the extent that Kurds were sidelined. In 1962, an 'exceptional census' stripped some 120,000 Kurds of the Syrian citizenship. [...] An alliance established by Hafez al-Assad in the 1970s broke down in in 2004 when an uprising followed a football game in the remnants of the Damascus Spring of 2000-01, the 2004 Kurdish revolt serving to embolden the Kurds [...] (p.35)

[ENDQUOTE]

However, there are so many books about the history of Assad in Syria, or Syria in general, that most readers will not care about this. Most readers will want a feel for Syrian society drawn from Starr's interviews or observations.

Here, Starr excels. Often his writing is vivid and evocative, if hopeless in its pursuit of a conclusion. He does capture a lot of nuance in the complicated relationships of different segments of Syrian society: the Baathist epoch has utterly transformed the country, spawning a host of 2nd-order effects.

But Starr's own personality gets in the way a lot, too. He argues and hectors interview subjects; he dwells a lot on observations that are frankly noise. For example, it turns out that Syrians no less than US nationals, when asked a question about public issues, typically say several incompatible things--like, we need a theocracy to be free, or the like. This is not meaningful, especially if one is exposed to political arguments in a lot of different countries (it's not just countries in dire crisis where people say deranged things). In the first part of the book he records not only his questions, but his pronouncements to Syrians--no doubt stunned at a journalist lecturing them. For example, he rails to ordinary civilians about their preferences:

[QUOTE]

[LEILA:]"The last thing we need is for NATO or America or Turkey to come and help us. This will destroy the country and I know that if they come it will only be for their own interests [...] I do not want freedom if it is free"

[...]

"[STARR:]So how many people must die for you to get what you want? Is it not wrong that people are dying every day?" I asked. (p.119)

[ENDQUOTE]

This is not intended as a real question, however tactless. And Starr does this constantly. After one particular observation, he suddenly becomes convinced the regime will fall; before, he has been impatient with people who want the regime to fall, and afterward, he is doubly impatient with people who fear the consequences of it falling.

The description of society or how Syrians/Syrian institutions behave in common situations is handy, if random (because he's simply generalizing from his personal experiences.) So this book falls into the category of one Westerner's testimony of the early phase of the Revolution, just as it transitioned into a guerrilla war. Starr's own personal expectations and preferences muddy the waters, and it is often quite difficult to decide what point he's trying to make, but not many other outsiders have recorded their experiences in such detail.

(1) For up-to-date information, I've relied mostly on Joshua Landis's blog, Syria Comment. One very good companion to this work, in my opinion, is Carsten Wieland's Syria - A Decade of Lost Chances: Repression and Revolution from Damascus Spring to Arab Spring (released 1 March 2012). Starr's book was released 23 weeks later, in August. Starr was a freelance journalist from Ireland, while Wieland was a diplomat from Germany.

(2) In addition to the turgid syntax of the quoted passage, Starr makes occasional jabs at the Baath Party's socialist past. I'm not sure if this just hippie-punching, or Marx-kicking (see my review for the The Morality of Money), or if Starr genuinely feels let down by the Baath Party's one-time socialist credentials, but characterizing the Baathist as "socialist" is a little like calling F. von Hayek a "liberal," and then taking this to mean he was just like Senator George McGovern. In a like manner, nearly all political activists in the developing world self-identified as "socialist" for many years; in some cases, such as early Baathists Michel Aflaq and Salah al-Din al-Bitar (founders of the Baath Party) or Gamal Abdul Nasser (1958-1962, President of the United Arab Republic of Egypt and Syria), this meant scarcely more than a developmentalist agenda and a commitment to "reform" traditional social institutions.

After 1962, Aflaq and Bitar resumed their control over Syrian politics; in 1966, a bloody coup replaced them with Saleh Jadid, who really did attempt to implement a hardline quasi-Leninist regime in Syria. After 1968-ish, this mainly consisted of terrible foreign relations--war, or veritable war, with Israel, Jordan, and the West (Edward Luttwak, in Coup d'État: A Practical Handbook, argues that Jadid was compelled to affect "socialism" because it afforded a manageable state structure, considering the sectarian and class structure of Syria). Assad's 1970 coup explicitly replaced a "socialist" dictatorship with a "nationist" one. This is not ironic, nor does it say anything about leftwing politics. The right beat the left in Syria after an open fight between military factions.

Fascinating read about the Syrian revolt, presented in a rare light
By Heather
I really enjoyed this read. I started it shortly before leaving Egypt to return to America, and I was impressed by the author's ability to capture a perspective not common of a typical expat journalist. It was bone-chilling to hear how many of the experiences Starr writes about mirrored the murkiness of the political tensions with the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt post-Arab spring.
