Don't Be Fooled by the Enclosed CD-Rom

While the Architectural Graphics Standards book is as good a reference as always, the enticement of a CD-Rom is a false promise. You have to purchase an unlock code to access the Rom. Said access code is available for a fee of $425.00. That wasn't disclosed before I purchased it.

The Big Red Book

It has 154 more pages than the 9th edition, so it has new information, but as you page through it you will find it seems almost identical. They need to keep most of the old data, so I wouldn't take off points for that. You can see the publisher's review for all of the new features: I noticed that the Historic Preservation chapter has been shortened a bit.
Potentially, the biggest addition is the CD-ROM, which has CAD files ready to use, and includes pretty much everything from the book. You might think that you are getting all that for the cost of the book, but...no. The "demo" CD comes in a sleeve inside the back cover, and is noted: "Full functionality, Limited data." You can access a drawing of a bar joist, for example. It exports a DWG or DXF file with layers based on line weights. The interface is pretty clear; you don't have to read any instructions to start using it. The CD actually has all of the data, but you have to pay another $425 online to "unlock" it. That could be a bargain, but I suspect that most firms will feel that their own detail library is more applicable to the work they do. Still, $425 represents less than a day's worth of billable hours.
Every architect knows the value of this book, and most every architecture firm (in the U.S. anyway) will want at least one copy just to stay current, and because the old one is getting worn out. You might as well get it now, and decide on the CD-ROM later. I'd love to have a special edition set with each page ever published in all of the AGS books, or even just the last 3 or 4. I'd give that 6 stars.

Lots of Hay, but Very Few Needles

Once again the editors of Graphic Standards have promised a useful reference for architects, and have fallen way short. In architecture school (1972), I purchased the sixth edition and found it better than most reference books for students of architecture. However, even then I noticed many sections of questionable value. Pages and pages of dimensions of designer furniture and kitchenware fall into this category.
Recently, after practicing architecture for 20 years, I was suckered back by publisher Wiley's siren song of how the new tenth edition is new, informative, refreshing, up to date, etc. Fooled again. Sure, the Graphic Standards is a fair source of information, but I question the editors' judgement as to what is worth publishing between the wonderfully bound front and rear cover. For example, look up "R-value" in the index and you are directed to 55 words on page 486 how R-value relates to windows and that it's the inverse of U-values. Nothing on the R-value of all exterior skin construction materials or how the R-value relates poorly to thermal massing materials. These things should be very important to architects and are disappointingly absent from the Graphic Standards. However, if you ever need to know what a Zamboni looks like, or need to know the dimensions required for a rodeo barrel race, this is your book! Want an entire page showing ten pieces of gymnastics equipment (pg. 777) or how to draw an ellipse using pen or pencil (pg.999)? Seek no more. Twenty four pages of kitchen utensils and garden tools are still there. This is the best place to find loads of pages of barely useful information of dubious worth.
Once the editors of Graphic Standards discover that a meaningful discussion on R-values in building materials deserves more space than the dimensions of a belt sander, then I might reconsider purchasing a later edition, but I won't hold my breath. Oh, one more thing, for you architects out there working on a Macintosh platform, the accompanying CD-ROM is useless.

Philip Jodidio's Taschen publications was much better.

Contrary to all previous Philip Jodidio's superb books published by Taschen Publishing, this edition by Image Publishing per my opinion is downgrade. The quality of prints and the paper are average and not superb as in Taschen Publications. The Book is informative but not extraordinary and impressive as Automobile Architecture book by Braun Publishing. The price is too expensive for the book of this caliber. Book is relatively small in size 9.5"x10.5"x1".

Beautiful, sad, poetic

I love narrative poetry, and this book was no exception. At the height of the Vietnam War, 10 year-old Kim Ha is forced to leave Saigon with her mother and older brothers. Her father has been missing for several years, and the family continually hopes for his return. The decision to leave is heartwrenching, knowing that if they go, there will be no real way for their father to find them again, if indeed, he is still alive. Ha's mother gives her children the option of saving one thing... everything else must be destroyed, so as not to leave any evidence behind for the invading soldiers.

Once aboard the ship, the family suffers from extremely close quarters and lack of food. The boat captain's unlucky snap judgement on the best escape route means that their journey is drawn out much longer than they had anticipated, necessitating rationing. People grow ruthless and hoard what little food they have. The ship is rescued by Americans, and the families make their way to the States. Salvation? Hardly. Ha and her family end up in Alabama in the early-70's, with racial tensions at an all time high. After everything she's been through, Ha must endure appallingly racist bullies at school, as well as condescending teachers, who don't understand that just because she hasn't learned English perfectly yet, that doesn't mean that she isn't a bright and extremely observant girl. Ha is desperately homesick and finds heavily-processed American food disgusting compared to the fresh papayas and traditional Vietnamese fare that she is used to.

At this point, I really began to wish for some sort of break from the unrelenting sadness of the story - whether by comic relief, or a sympathetic character to lighten the tension. I had hoped that Ha's neighbor, Miss Washington would fill the bill, but even though she's kindly and means well, ultimately she comes across as a dotty old lady who doesn't quite get it.

A semi-autobiographical story, this book is simultaneously difficult to read, and very accessible. The four "chapters" it's broken into: Saigon, At Sea, Alabama, and From Now On, neatly break up the action. The emotional turmoil that Ha goes through makes this book quite challenging indeed, but the words flow so smoothly it's hard not to get drawn in to the tale. The writing was wonderfully crafted and made reading about the immigrant experience completely compelling. As powerful, arresting and in some ways just as sad as The Bridge to Terabithia, Inside Out and Back Again could definitely be a Newbery contender.

Lovely & thought-provoking

INSIDE OUT AND BACK AGAIN is a beautiful novel-in-verse about a young girl who flees Vietnam as Saigon is falling and makes a new home with her mother and brothers in Alabama. Based on the author's own experiences as a child immigrant, the poems are spare and lovely, and they manage to capture both the sense of wonder and the feeling of isolation of a newcomer in a world where everything seems different. As a teacher, one thing I found especially interesting and heartbreaking was Ha's feeling of suddenly not being smart any more when she enrolled in her new school in America - such a common experience for gifted kids who encounter a language and culture barrier in a new home.

I really enjoyed this book and think readers in grades 4-7 will love it, too. It'd be great as a classroom read-aloud or for literature circles. Consider recommending it along with CRACKER: THE BEST DOG IN VIETNAM by Cynthia Kadohata and ALL THE BROKEN PIECES, an equally beautiful novel in verse by Ann Burg,as a way to explore Vietnam from different perspectives. It would also be fantastic paired with Katherine Applegate's HOME OF THE BRAVE, which is also an immigrant story in verse, from the point of view of a boy from Africa. Both books are short and poignant, and readers will come away with a much better understanding of what it feels like to land in a strange, new world and try to make that place home.

Inside Out & Back Again

Ha has spent all of her ten years in Saigon (Vietnam). She knows the markets, she does well in school, and she loves the papaya tree that she planted behind her family's house. But the war is creeping ever closer and her mother struggles to provide enough food. As it becomes apparent that Saigon will fall to the Communist North, Ha and her family make a painful choice to flee the country in hopes of finding refuge. When they land in America things seem to be working out, but as Ha struggles to adapt to a new language, a new religion, new climate, and new food, she wonders if it wouldn't have been better to stay in Vietnam. And what about the father she has never met who went missing nine years earlier?

Usually I am not a big fan of novels written in free verse. I like my poetry to be poetry and my stories to be prose. But I have had the privilege of reading this book and several others that have convinced me that done right, free verse can be particularly powerful. This story is based on the author's experiences as a child and maybe that's why they are so realistic. I promise you will not be able to read this book without feeling compassion for Ha and her family. You will cheer for their successes and feel discomfort at the poor treatment they receive from many. The book provides a thought-provoking look at a topic (immigration) that remains controversial still. Highly recommended.

In emerging countries, most of the population does not have access to bank accounts or financial markets to save or borrow. The result is that many firms cannot get access to financial resources to grow, while households cannot borrow and save in ways that could reduce the riskiness and poverty of their lives. Even those that do have access to formal finance find that credit is unreliable and expensive. These financial failures limit growth and also increase the frequency of costly financial crises.

These issues, and many more like them, mean that finance in emerging economies is different and often more complex than the view presented in most textbooks, where finance is only considered from the perspective of wealthy, developed economies. This book addresses this failure by focusing on the important characteristics of financial systems in emerging market economies and their differences from those in developed countries. Ward was typical (in some ways, very unusual in others) as a British officer, serving in a number of locations. As most foreign service types, he was a mason, and later served as an Orthodox bishop (in a very unorthodox chain). He finished his life in Cyprus, where he had fled following allegations of sexual impropriety.

Very little of that is reflected in this book, other than his intense interest in the local mystery religions. He was able to participate as a visiting dignitary and to witness the triads from inside and then, after they were made illegal in Hong Kong, from the outside. His three volume set is detailed and the only one of its kind.

It is important to realize that this, and the three hundred dollar volume set [Hung Society or the Society of Heaven and Earth (Paperback)~ J. S. M. Ward (Author), W. G. Stirling (Author)] are the same books. Ward did not magically come back to life for the other volumes.

The thought of opening my own restaurant has been simmering on mind for the last few years now, but when I thought about how to get customers and a good reputation around town, I always got overwhelmed. After reading this in depth and well thought out book, I really think I have a shot. The author really gets into every nook and cranny of marketing yourself online. Methods, Strategies and Tips to double your profits.

Wow, I can’t explain how much of this information I could have used when I started. The tips on refining your social media presence and engaging with customers online was never really a thought I had. Trust me, just throwing up a facebook page and a mediocre site is not good enough these days. After reading this, a thousand things just clicked into place in my mind. A highly recommended book as far as I’m concerned. Thanks!

I've been helping my grandparents with online marketing for their restaurant. They've had a facebook for quite some time but needed to expand social media presence. This book has definetly helped. Profits haven't doubled but there has been a visible increase. If you want to learn how to interact with your customers on social media better, this is a good read.

About the Author

Dr Prendergast qualified from The University of Nottingham Medical School in 1982 and trained in Cardiology in Cardiff, Paris and Edinburgh followed by an initial Consultant appointment at The North West Regional Cardiac Centre, Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester. He has specialist interests in coronary heart disease, percutaneous cardiac intervention, valvular heart disease and infective endocarditis and is an experienced practitioner of evidence-based medicine. Mr Baguneid graduated from University of Manchester in 1993 and followed a career in vascular surgery. Following a position as an anatomy demonstrator in Cardiff, he completed general surgical training in the North West, and specialised in vascular surgery. During training he spent 3 years performing research into the development of tissue-engineered vascular grafts, which remains a key topic of interest to this day.
Dr Kunal Kulkarni is a junior doctor training with the Oxford Deanery. He qualified from the University of Oxford with a first-class degree in Physiological Sciences, also receiving a special prize in his final medical examinations. He has an interest in medical writing and education, having had a number of articles published in peer-reviewed journals. He also runs the increasingly popular 'revise4finals' website for medical students.
Dr James Harrison is a Specialist Trainee in Medicine in the London Deanery. He graduated at Green College, Oxford in 2005, with pre-clinical studies at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He has a particular interest in medical writing and has edited undergraduate publications and contributed articles to several peer-reviewed journals.
